MEMORANDUM

Date: October 23, 2014

To: Meagan Kinley
From: Sebastian Diaz
Subject: Progress Report

Below, I discuss the status of my progress with my inquiry into disciplinarily project.

Introduction
With this project I intend to accumulate information, by various sources, to answer my personal
questions regarding the discipline Im investigating. The discipline Im investigating is cinematography
and with it come some questions I need to answer, my primary and secondary questions.
Primary Question: What will it take for me to become the great movie director I so much desire?
Secondary Questions:
Would I have to attend a different college which offers a better education on that field?
Will I ever make it on my own or depend on other people?
How many years will I have to study?
Will my family ever support me?
If when I graduate, will I get a job on that field right away?
Research Methods
My research methods include interviewing, surveying, site observation, and document analyses.
Interview(s)
The interview is a helpful method because it helps me answer questions that relate to me and to
capture the interviewees experiences and feelings towards the subject. Here are the questions I asked
during my interview.

Interview Questions
Where did you study cinematography?
What do you do?
How did all this start?
Do you love what you do?
Tell me, how hard is it to make it in the cinematic world? And also describe to me what to make it
means to you?
What are some of the things you have done based on your field of study?
Do you believe anyone can do cinema?
What does it take to do what you do or anything else in this department?
Did you ever think you would do this for a living?
What did you have to do to make it where you are right now?
Elaborate on some of the obstacles that prevented you from reaching your goals?
What will be next for you in these couple of years?
Why did you decide this particular career?
If you could go back in time would you do it again?
Did you have or do anything before studying this?
Do you pretend to do this for the rest of your life?
What is it that you plan to achieve or to give to the people with your profession?
The person I interviewed was Jesus Alejandro Heras, during the day of October 15, 2014 around 3:00 pm
in his residence. The interview lasted approximately from 15 to 20 minutes. The way I recorded the
interview was through my computer, typing as he answered the questions. The interview answered all
of the questions of my Secondary questions.

Survey(s)
I have completed the survey questions but no the survey itself. The reason I have not yet conducted the
survey its because its hard to find an environment with cinematographers or people who are familiar
with it. The survey answered the first, second, third, and fifth questions of my Secondary questions.

I will have this done by its due date

Site Observation(s)
I have completed the site observation. The site I have observed was Canal 44 and the set for a Christmas
special on TV by ABC. The observations were done on October 17 and October 19, 2014 both
approximately done at 5:00 pm. I just observed from afar and watch the interaction of the individuals in
the environment. This part of the project just made me understand how a cinematographic environment
worked.
Document Analyses
I have completed this method. The documents I have chosen briefly explain and converse about the
ever-changing field of cinematography and how we need to adapt to its changes and embrace them.
This is the link to the document I analyzed
http://www.cinematographer.org.au/cms/page.asp?ID=21116
This answers my second and fifth questions of my Secondary questions.

Conclusion
I believe I have successfully completed almost every aspect of this project. If anything I only expect
problems when conducting the survey. The hardest part will be the survey, trying to get the right people
to fill my survey will be difficult. The most beneficial part of this project was by far the interview. It
answered most of my Secondary questions.
