Grade/Age: 2nd Grade
Date: October 1, 2014

S.IA.02.13 Communicate and present findings of observations.

S.IP.02.11 Make purposeful observation of the natural world using the appropriate senses.
Objectives:
Students will be able to discuss their observations from the scavenger hunt.
Students will be able to explore objects in the natural world using their five senses.
Teaching Strategy:
Indirect Teaching
Introduction/ Set induction:
Have students come down to the carpet.
Talk about our five senses and how we use them when we are observing something.
Instructional Activities:
Explain to the students that we are going to be going outside and doing a scavenger hunt. We
want to focus on our five senses to find things outside.
Each student will have their piece of paper that will be divided into the five senses. They are to
observe things out on the playground using their five sense. They are not allowed to use their
senses of taste, but they can look around and come up with things that they could taste, things
that they could find outside to eat.
Once students are all done labeling all of their objects we are going to talk about the different
objects that we found outside and the sense that we used to find them.
Conclusion/Closure:
Watch Magic School Bus Gets Planted.
Transitional Activities:
It is time to go to recess and so when the students are quiet they will be released to go outside.

Assessment:
While students are doing their observations outside I will be walking around to make sure they
are understanding and making observations using their five senses. Also the sheet that they are
turning in will show me what kind of things are were observing. Through conversation after the
observations with the students I will know which students can communicate their findings to the
rest of the class.
Differentiation:
Students will be working by themselves, but if someone is struggling I might hook them up with
a partner to help them.
Resources Needed:

Hand out (5 Senses)

Reflection:
The lesson started well I explained to the students what they were doing and then we went
outside. Ms. Kish told me that the big kids were going to be out for recess, but I would be okay
because they play at a different part of the playground then I wanted to use. But it ended up
being that the big kids were all mixed in and so we had to go inside a little bit early. But most of
the students got the activity done.
