Quizlet is a free US based website providing


learning tools for students, including flashcards,
study and game modes. There are audio options
of record own voice or text- to- voice. There are
mobile applications in IOS and Android. A 15year-old high school student created Quizlet in
2005, but it is used in all levels of education
including post-secondary. All of the material is
user-generated.
To open an account you will require an email,
username, password and a birthdate (US
requirements). Free or $25/ yr./teacher,
$15/yr./student.
Terms of use and privacy policy in place. User
can control what is visible to the public.
Etiquette rules stipulated in terms of use. All
data can be permanently deleted. Truste
Childrens Seal for Compliance (US).
Asynchronous, OL and F2F. Suitable for students
and teachers to generate study materials.
Eg: Medical terminology flash cards, multiple
choice quizzes

Facebook is an OL social networking site


headquartered in California, USA. Once
registered to use the site, users create a
personal profile including choosing their own
privacy levels. There is no financial cost
associated with joining or using the site as

advertising generates revenue.

ACCOUNT REQUIREMENTS:

Name, first & last, email, birthdate, gender &


password required for an account. All users must
be older than 13 years.

levels of privacy available: public, closed &
secret. Etiquette rules stipulated in terms of
service. User profile is visible to public regardless
of level of privacy chosen.

create a group page that is secret thus only
accessed by invitation. FB is ideal for discussions
between students and teachers. Teachers can
post assignments and deadlines, as site is only
visible to invited students.

Padlet is a free US based website that can be


used as a personal or educational tool. It is a
multimedia friendly, free- form, real- time wiki.
The site allows users to create walls (websites)
and add content, e.g.: comments, docs, videos, &
pictures. It is easy, encourages collaboration and
has mobile capabilities. Was originally created
under the Wallwisher label. There are no limits
to the number of people who can post to your
wall at the same time.
An account is not needed to use Padlet or build
walls but if you want to edit your wall after 24
hours you will need to sign up for an account.
User name, password and email are required.
Google users can use their Google account to
access Padlet. Anyone with the address to the
Wall, on which your content is published, can
view it. Once the account is deleted all
posts/walls are deleted too.

Padlet walls are initially semi-private as the


walls URL is only known to you and not
published publicly. There are 4 privacy settings a
user can choose: public (can show up in search
engines), hidden link, password protected, and
private (only seen by invitation). Account holder
determines what visitors can do once they are
on the wall (view, write, moderate, and
administer). Terms of service include privacy
settings and community guidelines.
Recommended that children under 13 be
supervised when using Padlet.
Padlet is used OL either synchronously or
asynchronously. Suitable for both students and
teachers. Teachers can use it to create group
norms in collaboration with students. Use a Wall
as an opportunity to determine what students
are taking away from a particular lesson (ticket
out the door format). Students can use a Wall as
a repository for projects; group or individual.

Haiku deck is a free US based slide deck


presentation tool. The concept is to build a story
around high-impact images. Tool is available for
iPad. Getty images are available for a fee with
the iPad app. One way to use the tool is to enter
a few keywords of text onto a slide and the app
searches a database of 35 million Creative
Commons images that suit your project. If an
image is chosen from Creative Commons the
proper attrition is automatically included. A user
can also choose images from personal pictures
or an image collection of their choice.
Account requires full name, email and password.
Site not intended for children under 13 years. A
user can log in using a Twitter or Facebook
account but the Haiku decks are not
automatically published on these sites.

separate privacy policy. The user has 3 privacy
choices: public (seen on search engines),
restricted and private (only viewed by user).

APPLICATION:

students and teachers.

A free US- based mind-mapping and


brainstorming tool. App for mobile applications.
Helps to organize thoughts and explores
relationships. Bubbl.us automatically connects
the bubbles stemming from the parent bubble
(concept). Mind mapping is a good tool for visual
and kinesthetic learners. Visual learners benefit
from associating ideas and concepts with
images. Kinesthetic learners learn well by
physically drawing their ideas. Can be used for
non-linguistic representations.
No account needed unless the user wants to
save the mind map. Account requires username,
and password, email & name is optional. A free
account entitles user to 3 saved mind maps. It is
$6 monthly for unlimited mind maps.
Site has Terms of Service and a privacy
agreement. Site is suitable for children to use.

Bubbl.us presents ideas and information in a


clear manner. It can be used for both students
and teachers. Because the mind maps can be
printed it is suitable for OL and F2F. Use is
asynchronous but user can give editing
permission to any contact.
Useful for a visual syllabus. Can use as a
brainstorming tool for projects etc. Useful to
illustrate relationships between concepts or
ideas.

Voicethread is a free US- based cloud tool. Known as


a group audio blog, Voicethread allows users to
record text and audio comments about uploaded
images, ideas, videos, and presentations. Using
Voicethread promotes conversation and debate
between users. Integrates with D2L, Moodle, and
Canvas & Blackboard. Requires adobe flash and has
mobile applications. Voicethread has accessibility
features that encourage participation from anyone.

ACCOUNT REQUIREMENTS:

First & last name, email & password required for an


account. Educator accounts allow Voicethread users
to create an unlimited number of threads that
include an unlimited number of comments for free.
Without an educator account, free users will be
limited to 3 Voicethread presentations. Classroom
teachers using Voicethread often create one account
for classroom use.

Terms of Use include the privacy policy. Children less


than 13 years cannot get an account. There are 3
privacy settings: public, restricted and private (for
your eyes only).

APPLICATION:

Voice thread can be used asynchronously in an


OL setting. Suitable for teachers to generate
discussion or debate about any idea or concept.
An OL adaption of the discussion table.

EmbedPlus is a free 3rd party browser extension


designed specifically to enhance playback of You
Tube videos. It adds features like chaptering,
Twitter, YouTube and Google chat reactions,

slow-motion playback. With a simple wizard, you
can customize a YouTube video to begin and end
where you want it. Designed to work with
Wordpress blogs that utilize You Tube videos.
EmbedPlus adds an extra control bar to a You
Tube video with DVD-like features. EmbedPlus
plugin is easy to customize and use.
This plugin is a SaaS (Software as a Service) and
it`s a third-party of EmbedPlus.com.
Use the WordPress plugin installer to install the
plugin.
Terms of Use and Privacy policy as per
WordPress.org.

Enhancing and making You Tube videos user


friendly. In healthcare we have multiple skill
videos that students study outside of skill lab.
Plugin would enhance any You Tube videos used
in a WordPress blog.
