Mary Conwell- Lesson Plan #2

Date: November 16, 2014

Subject: Science

Grade: 2th Grade

Goals/Objectives/Standards:
Science Standard 2-PS1-1: Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of
materials by their observable properties.
NET-1.b. -Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and
processes using technology. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression
After completing the lesson, the student will be able to recognize materials by their observable properties (e.g.,
solids, liquids, and gases). Also, students will create a short video to show their understanding of matter.

Timeline/structure of lesson: 90 minute lesson.

Time

Opening/Framing the Lesson/Introduction/Early

Assessment
I will begin the lesson by giving each student a popsicle
stick. I will explain to them that when they participate
in the discussion and actually talk then I will collect
their stick. I will tell students that nobody is allowed to
have a stick at the end of our discussion. This will
encourage every student to participate in the
discussion. I will then begin the discussion by asking
the students their prior knowledge about solids, liquids,
and gases. I will bring in several different example of
all three states of matter, and hold them up in front of
class then have the students write down on a piece of
paper what type of matter they think it is. They will
then turn to their buddy and give say a new example of
a solid, liquid, and gas. This will help me find out what
the students know and what they still need to learn.
The Lesson Structure: Activities
After gathering their papers, I will present a
short Prezi going over the difference between
solids, liquids, and gases. The Prezi will give a
definition of each, and then several examples to
follow with animations to make it more clear.

Next we will complete an experiment in groups. I

will split the class up into small groups that I
made prior to class. I will pass out a lab sheet to
each of the groups with procedures that they
are able to follow. I will stand in front of the
class and complete my own experiment and the
students will follow along step by step. The
materials needed for the experiment will be
ready on the table before class. The experiment

Monitor/Feedback
By giving each student a popsicle
stick for the discussion it will
promote a better class
discussion with every students
input.

I will have the groups premade

before the experiment begins. I
will walk through the
experiment step by step and
give students feedback
immediately while completing
the experiment.
Students will be required to
show proper computer lab
etiquette while working in the
lab. After they finished their
video they need to immediately

and vinegar in a deflated balloon and see what

happens when baking soda and vinegar are
combined! Before we put in each ingredient we
will discuss what property of matter they are
and I will ask students what they think will
happen when the ingredients are mixed
together.

After the experiment I will have students go to

the computer lab and create a short video in

will then email me their video and login to

Closing/Assessment
Students will be assessed with an exit ticket through
Socrative. It will have different questions to make sure
students understand the difference between solids,
liquids, and gases.

Homework
Students homework will be to answer discussion posted
on Edmodo. They need to answer the post in a
paragraph. They also need to read their classmates
responses.

what I need to reteach.
I will check Edmodo the
next morning to make
sure everyone
commented on the
Edmodo discussion.
