In groups of 3 you will construct a tin man or animal and calculate the amount of tin foil needed to cover it using the geometry concept of surface area. You will construct your tin man/animal using common everyday geometrical objects, such as cereal boxes, paper towel roles, etc. After your tin man/animal is constructed, you will need to calculate the surface area. Once youve determined the surface area for the days body part, you will receive the amount of foil you calculated for the surface area. This will determine how accurate your calculations were (depending on how much you have left over, or how short you were). The objects you choose to construct your tin man/animal with can only be cylinders, prisms, cones and spheres. You must use at least one of each. Each group will also turn in a calculations sheet of their surface area, which includes measurements of each part and all work that took place to find your surface area. This project will take 4* class days: Day 1: Body Day. Today you will calculate the surface area of your tin man/animals body. Dont forget to take the location of the head and arms and legs into account when constructing this! Once you know the amount of foil you need and how your net will be constructed, you can come get the material from Ms. Mertz or Miss Rickard. Day 2: Arms & Legs Day. Today you will calculate the surface area of your tin man/ animals arms and legs. Dont forget that one end of each will not be covered since it will be adhered to the body! Once you know the amount of foil you need and how your nets will be constructed, you can come get the material from Ms. Mertz or Miss Rickard. Day 3: Hat Day. Today you will calculate the surface area of your tin man/animals hat. Dont forget that the bottom of the hat will not be covered, as it will be resting on the tin man/animals head. Once you know the amount of foil you need and how your net will be constructed, you can come get the material from Ms. Mertz or Miss Rickard. Day 4: Face Day. Today you will calculate the surface area of your tin man/animals head. Once you know the amount of foil you need and how your net will be constructed, you can come get the material from Ms. Mertz or Miss Rickard.
At the end of this project, you will do a reflection on both the project itself and your/groups work.
*Number of days may change as we work through the project.
