Are/should athletes be held to a higher standard?
Amburgey, Rick. "Should Athletes Be Held to a Higher Standard?" Sidelines. N.p., n.d. Web. 03
Nov. 2014.
Amburgey argues that athletes arent held to a higher standard, but should be. He argues
that athletes should be thankful for the opportunity. He says this should not be limited
to athletes but expanded to people that have influence over children.
This article is short, but it isnt really the content of the article that is useful. There is a
very active comments section that provides useful insight into public opinion on the
topic. Several different people from both sides argue their side and the points they all
make are valid and will become very useful information.
How do we expect our children to follow rules if our role models dont?

How have scandals affected an athletes career in the long run?

Ballengee, Ryan. "Tiger Woods No Longer Necessary to Draw Fans, Says Sponsor Rep." Yahoo
Sports. Yahoo Sports, 03 Nov. 2014. Web. 03 Nov. 2014.
Ballangee writes about how Tiger Woods has lost his wow factor. Tournaments used to
pay Tiger millions of dollars, just for him to show up. In January Woods was paid $3
million to play in a tournament hosted in Abu Dhabi. Ballangee says golf no longer

needs a key player to make a tournament a success. The sport is now growing globally
where people show up to watch the sport, not to just watch one or two top players
compete.
Tiger woods was involved in a scandal, several years ago. Woods was found to of had
dozens of incidents where he had affairs with dozens of women around the world. This
personal incident has had a huge effect on his career. Tiger used to be the #1 golfer in the
world and now he struggles to place top 20 in a tournament. Tiger woods affairs were
highly covered by the media and provide a perfect example of how a personal incident
can destroy an athletes career. Tiger used to unstoppable and now people wont even pay
to have him at their tournaments.
What if he wasnt an athlete and no one really knew about it? How would his career turned
out different?

How does media play a role in scandals involving athletes?

Schmuck, Peter. "As Rice Case Unfolds, Ravens, NFL Act as If They Still Have Something to
Hide." Baltimoresun.com. Baltimore Sun, Oct.-Nov. 2014. Web. 28 Oct. 2014.
This article discusses the recent scandal involving Baltimore Ravens running back Ray
Rice. Schmuck talks about what Ray Rice was originally punished for, abusing his now
wife. A video of the abuse was released and Rice was punished again even though, it is
against NFL rules to punish a person twice for the same offense. He clearly lays out who
are the key players on each side and what they hope to accomplish. A team of lawyers are
doing an independent investigation of the situation while, the whole Ravens franchise

is less than eager to give the lawyers any information. The goal of this situation is to
bring light on situations like this and to create a more balanced disciplinary system.
This article is usefully because it is a current development and it provides very useful
information for my topic. The media is very involved with this case so it provides a
perfect example of how media might affect the situation. This will also provide insight on
how a personal incident might affect an athletes career, where it might not have the same
impact if he wasnt an athlete.
How would the outcome of been different if Rice wasnt a professional athlete?

Does having a more expensive lawyer play a role?

Schrotenboer, Brent. "Small Town, Big Lawyer: Rusty Hardin Gives Adrian Peterson Major
Edge." USA Today. Gannett, 03 Nov. 2014. Web. 03 Nov. 2014.
Adrian Peterson, NFL running back, has been accused of felony child abuse of his 4 year
old son. Rusty Hardin is his lawyer. Schrotenboer talks about how big of an advantage
this is for Peterson and that this is a perfect place for Hardin to make a case. Hardins
plan is to make a plea deal before the case goes to trial. Hardin is a very prestigious and
expensive lawyer that has dealt with these high profile cases before. Juries tend to believe
him, which is his biggest advantage.
This is a perfect example of how having a more expensive lawyer plays a huge role in the
outcome of high profile cases. I looked up how much Hardin makes, which is around 1112 million dollars a year, and no normal person could ever afford how high his fees are.
It would be easy for a lawyer to prove Peterson guilty but, with Hardin at his side the
odds now flip in favor of Mr. Peterson.

Does have access to expensive lawyers give athletes there care-free attitude?

How are these situations handled differently if they involve everyday people?
Tisiger, Sarah. "Local Man Pleads Guilty to Domestic Abuse Charge." Muscatine Journal.
Muscatine Journal, 28 Oct. 2014. Web. 03 Nov. 2014.
A man, James Heuer, plead guilty to domestic abuse after hitting his wife. Heuer was
arrested with marijuana in his pocket. Heuer will pay $2815 in fines and serve a year in
jail.
This article is important because it proves how much of an effect media has. This article
is about an average joe and no one really cares. It is a short article, the situation played
out quickly, and there was barely any media coverage on the situation. Articles involving
athletes are long and are very complex because, they are heavily watched by the media.
The media can skew the outcome of a trial in favor or against the accused.
If this incident was covered on national news, how might the outcome be different?
