Unit Overview

Concept: Elements of Art


Concept Questions: How do artists use the elements of art to create their work?

Stage 1: Desired Results


Aesthetics: Enduring Understanding: Art can have diverse values, meanings and definitions. VB
Instructional Objectives:

AF.19 Student will apply criteria to describe aesthetic qualities found in works of art and design.

Art Criticism: Enduring Understanding: Artworks are objects for interpretation.


Instructional Objectives:

AF.15: The student will interpret works of art and design for meaning (e.g., intentional,
symbolic, implied and/or metaphorical).

Art History: Enduring Understanding: Art is a reflection of time, place and culture.
Instructional Objectives:

AF.12: The student will define various art careers in the field of art and design.

Art Production: Enduring Understanding: Meaningful art making is about exploration, asking questions,
problem solving and developing a knowledge-base.
Instructional Objectives:

AF.3- Student will employ a variety of subject matter, including cultural or social concepts, to
express ideas in works of art.
AF.5-The student will apply traditional media (e.g., Painting, drawing, ceramics, ect.) and
contemporary media (e.g., relevant technology, digital media) to art-making processes.
AF.6: Students will demonstrate craftsmanship in a work of art (e.g., informed use of technical
skills and knowledge when applying media techniques and processes).
AF.8: Students will maintain and use a process art portfolio (e.g., sketchbook/journal and
working portfolio) for planning, documentation, reflection and as a resource in the art making
process.

Students will KNOW- Hand building clay processes and techniques for creating texture. Collage
techniques and ways of creating value changes.
Students will UNDERSTAND that- Art can be created through exploration of techniques.
Students will DO

Create a ceramic pot using the coil building method and creating a design and texture through
experimentation of techniques.
Create a collage that contains symbolism that represents the artists.

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence


Summative Assessment Performance Tasks and Products: Artists experiment with art making
processes and techniques to create meaning in their work. In this unit students will experiment with art
making processes and techniques for incorporating the elements of art into their work. Student
Procedures: Art making/ Design Problems:

Use coil building process to create a pot.


Manipulate coils to create an interesting design.
Experiment with different tools and objects to create texture.
Create an image of an animal through collage with cut up magazine pages.
Use magazine scraps to create value change in an image.
Written Reflection/Critique:
Students will write an artist statement using a writing prompt.

Stage 3: Learning Plan


Learning Plan 1-5: Crazy Coil Pots:
Concept Question: How can you create a form and design by manipulating coils? What kinds of tools
and objects can you use to make texture in clay?
Essential Question: Can an artist create meaningful art through exploration of processes and
techniques?
Learning Plan 10-13: Painting with Paper:
Concept Questions: How does an artist use symbolism to express an idea? How does an artist create
value in a piece of work? Do colors have different values?
Essential Questions: Is symbolism used by artists to express an idea?Can an artist show depth with
color? Can an artist create value in color without paint or other drawing media?
