Dirk's Navigating Genres

1. Some genres that I feel that I know well are Text Messaging, email, formal
writing and fictional writing. I learned these genres through out my life
through the things that I love to do. I would never become familiar with a
genre unless I had the emotional urge to pursue a genre. Growing up I learned
to text message because all my friends did it. I had no choice. I can say that I
truly hate to text message but its something that I have to do in order to keep
in touch with my friends. Email was something that I always enjoyed doing
because I enhanced the feeling of being professional and formal. These two
feelings arent feelings that you get to feel everyday but within email you get
dragged into the formal and professional world. Formal writing is a nice way
to get your point across without being rude. In formal writing you can show
use the word that you never use in your everyday vocabulary. You can let
anyone read it without getting the response That sounds dumb! from one of
your friends. My favorite genre, fictional writing has been something that I
will do in my free time. Looking at a sheet of paper and writing the thoughts
that go through my head directly on the paper. The coolest part is that these
thoughts can go wherever they would like. All four of these genres are learned
throughout life, as you become a writer. There are plenty more genres that I
am aware of but these four are the most important to me life.

2. When writing a piece of literature you begin to tighten the straps around your
writing. This means that as you grow up you are constantly learning new and
cool ways to revolutionize your writing. The way that you start your short
stories, how you leave the reader wondering, or even how you need to quit
ranting. The rules that I have learned over the years have brought my writing
to where it is today. My writing sure isnt perfect but I sure am better than
when I was in 1st grade and didnt exactly know how to spell my own name.
As the years go by and the English teacher lets you know where to put
commas and how to use a semicolon you really grasp the rules of writing. The
rules of writing are what you will need in order to get though the next years of
you life especially my next few years of life. In order to keep your writing
knowledge expanding you have to keep writing and learning from your
mistakes and then after you make these terrible mistakes you create rules out
of them, making sure that you will never make these mistakes again because
you know that you are better than them. The growth of my writing is based off
of the rules that I have made and created throughout my own writing and
seeing the things that trouble me and fixing them. This is how I found my
rules and I believe this is how others should create his or her rules.

3. Freedom is the only reason that I do write because I know that there are things
that I will write that people would not enjoy reading but I would. Freedom is
something that you cant take away from someone when it comes to writing.
The moment you find that paper and pencil you can write whatever you would
like. When I enjoy the freedom the most is when writing fictional literature.
Even when reading a piece of fiction I can see the freedom that the writer felt.

Looking over the past years Ive noticed that freedom is a characteristic and
trait that I love to carry with me. I know that some countries dont have the
freedom that we do but the people that are in the countries without the
freedom can always turn to writing to share whatever feeling they might have.
The Freedom of writing is something that can never be take from a person as
long as they know how to write and are capable. When given a topic in school
to write about I will always find a way to make sure that I write what I would
like. For example, when I was told to write about a discourse community I
wrote about the discourse community that appealed to me the most. Freedom
is what will appeal to me when I am told to write something or am writing
something on my own time. Freedom will give me the motivation and power I
need to be successful.
RESPONSE
I chose this moodle posting because the topic of genre really appealed to me in
this class. After reading the article for this post I was even more interested in
genre. I thought that I knew what genre was but after dissecting genre I realized
that I didnt know what genre really was. How I understood genre was really
captured in this post and that is why I included it.
Learning to Serve
The work force that I was apart of at Autobell Car Wash was one with many
slang words and sayings. Going to work everyday I would have to review the ways to
say how to do something. The first time I ever walked on the lot I had no idea about
anything that was happening. Training for the job was beyond confusing because I
didnt have an idea of what the managers were saying because they were using the
slang as well. Especially after working at Autobell for about 6 months I could

honestly say that I had a grasp around the slang. When I would come home to my
parents to tell them about my day they would just stare at me and nod their heads and
act like they knew what I was talking about because I would always use the slang
words. I believe that they started to understand the slang after I had worked at
Autobell for 6 months. Working on the lot was a fun place. I learned the name of
almost every fragrance and cleaning product known to man. The costumers would
not understand anything that the employees were saying because the employees
would be using slang words. We would not only use slang words for the job and work
we also made slang words for the car and auto parts. You almost needed a translator
just to understand the employees. The improvement of me understanding the slang
also improved my productivity within the job and it also helped me make new friends.
RESPONSE
This moodle posting was one that I felt really let me get my ideas out on paper. I
really took the time I had writing this to get my thoughts about my old work place on
paper. It was a discourse community that really helped me find who I was. The
language that we to speak was really in depth and only the workers could understand
it. I found that this posting was easy to write because this discourse had so much to
talk about.

SRTTOL
I believe that the English dialect has truly influenced the rest of the world but surely
should not determine what a young child should be expected to speak in school. The
dialect that a child has Is something that that child is born with. When the child is
young he has no control of what he is taught therefore he should be allowed to speak
any dialect. Although I do believe that the child should grow up learning English at a

young age as it is something that is very important especially if that child is to live in
the united states for his childhood. As a child that grew up with English as my first
language I cannot compare myself to any of the students that do not have English as
their first languages. Universities should follow the language of the county that they
are in. If a student is proficient in that language then he or she should study in that
foreign country. The universities should have classes that foreign students can take in
order to improve their ability to do well in the foreign school that they choose to
attend. This Problem with dialect I dont believe still persists as strongly for the
university level education but more for the elementary education. The younger
students have a more difficult issue because many public schools do not completely
educate students in other languages and that is hard for immigrants. The older
students, the ones in the universities, can take classes, that they choose, that will help
with improving his or her language speaking abilities.
RESPONSE
This post caught my eye because of the language aspect. Im really interested in
culture and languages. The topic of this article was also political and I thought that
was really interesting. After reading this article I decided to state my thoughts through
this moodle posting and it was very helpful so say how I felt about this topic.
