Math and Social Studies

Grade Level: 5th Grade

Todays Objective:
TLWBAT practice reading and writing number in standard form, word form, expanded
form and powers of ten.
TLWBAT Demonstrate an understanding of place value on a more proficient level.
Analyze Learners
Total number of students: 16
Male students: 9

State Objectives
SOL 5.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times
as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place
to its left.
SOL 5.2 Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a
number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when
a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to
denote powers of 10.

Utilize Media, Materials and Methods
Media
Projection screen- Will be used as a template screen to show the students what their
screens should look like
Instructors computer- Will be used to present the information to the students
16 individual Mac books- Will be used for each of the students to follow along with the
instructor and to complete their individual work.
Edmodo- Stores all of the lesson plans and coursework for the students. Also serves as a
virtual classroom for the students to communicate and get help from each other in and
outside of the classroom.
Materials
Math Product Key will be used to access the Edmodo materials that are uploaded from
the teacher.
Motivational Math Book will serve as reinforcement and homework after completion of
the lesson.
Place Value Rap Lyrics will engage and excite the children and this will serve as a
starter for the day. The lyrics will give them an overall gist of the lesson. (Math Video)
http://www.rockinthestandards.com/site/ - (rap for place value)
Edmodo Account Username and Password will enable the students to log into the virtual
classroom and access the lecture PowerPoint and activities.
Math Manipulative Box will serve as hands on activity kit that students will use in
demonstrating the expansion of numbers.
Dry Erase Boards will be used individually by the students when recording an answer,
and demonstrating a problem with their kit.
Green and Red Dry Erase Markers will be used to write on the white boards when

labeling the various parts of the problem.

Erasers will be used when a mistake has been made or when the class has moved on to
another problem.
Method
(Whole Group) Whole Number Recognition- TTW Demonstrate and define what whole
numbers are. TTW show videos and use manipulative to establish a base knowledge in
this area.
Standard Algorithm TTW demonstrate and define what the Standard Algorithms are.
Arrays TTW develop illustrations and meaningful pictures to demonstrate what arrays
are. TTW express how the arrays are only visual representations of the numbers. TTW
use Blocks, Cubes and etc.
Individualized instruction of Expanded Notation- TTW use the different colored number
counters to represent the different places in the number. TTW teach Expanded notation
using the Sandwich Method.
Require Learner Participation
(Whole Group) Whole Number Recognition: TSW give examples of what they think
whole numbers are. Students will review place value and will identify the different
values. TSW compare, contrast and state differences between numbers based on place
value.
Standard Algorithm: TSW write numbers in standard form. After which, the students
will transcribe the standard form into word form.
Arrays- TSW draw base ten blocks, hundreds cubes and ones to demonstrate three digit
numbers. Upon successful completion, TSW use various pictures and diagrams to
demonstrate the value of different numbers.
Expanded notation: TSW explain how to break apart numbers. TSW demonstrate the
visual of expanded notation through the usage of their manipulative kit. After which,
they will jot down their information on the dry erase board.
Evaluate and Revise
Students will complete an online quiz made from the teacher at the end of the week.
Every student will not receive the same test. Each student will log on to their Edmodo
account and the test will be visible toward the end of the week. Each student will have to
take their test until they have at least 85% proficiency.
The students grades will be strictly confidential and will serve as feedback for their
personal information.
Closure: Math Today we have practiced reading and writing number in standard form,
word form, expanded form and powers of ten. Tonight you are to complete the remaining
problems on the sheet and be ready to check tomorrow.
