Task 4 Reflections
In Task 4, the objective was to craft a 10-12 page paper that would introduce a
scholarly audience to the discourse community, contribute to scholarly conversations
about the question or issue, provide a detailed analysis of the writing, and propose some
ways to move the conversation about future research and analysis. I believe that based on
the grade I received for my initial draft of Task 4 that I accomplished all of these goals,
but that I definitely needed some fine-tuning.
Right from the beginning, I deleted the first sentence of the introduction from the
initial draft. I deleted it because it discussed our class and I should not have referenced
the class in a stand alone paper. I also changed one of my headings from Discourse
Community Introduction to Olympia Titans Baseball Introduction. I did this because
the original heading was not specific enough. Having the more specific heading in my
opinion creates more interest for the readers. On page 3 of my initial draft, I deleted the
small paragraph starting with I have already discussed. I deleted these few sentences
because they did not form a full paragraph, and they were in there as filler and not useful
substance.
In the paragraph discussing lexis, I added a few sentences at the end to relate the
paragraph back to my original argument, because it was lacking. By relating it back to
my argument, it strengthened the paper. Something else I added was an explanation of

what bunting is, in the paragraph about giving signs to my players. I feel that adding an
explanation of bunting cleared up any doubts about what it is for anyone who is not
familiar with baseball.
Lastly, I fixed minor grammatical errors such as not italicizing the name of a
book; drop quotes, and mix-ups of where commas and periods go inside of quotes. While
these errors are minor, fixing them makes the overall paper look and sound more
professional.
