Rate Your Educational Technology Literacy

For this assignment you will do a self-assessment of your current technology


literacy. You will visit this checklist three times during the course. During the
first week of class, you will check off those items in the Beginning column
about which you have a full working knowledge. During the sixth session of
class, youll reopen the document you have saved and do a second
evaluation in the Middle column to show your growth in knowledge of the
standards. Youll save and submit the document with the first two columns
and reflections recorded during week 6. Youll give this document a last visit
during the final week (session 16) of the class. You will enter checkmarks in
the End column and your final reflections. The completed document will show
your Beginning, Middle and End self-assessments and growth in technology
literacy through the course.
You will learn much about educational technology as you read through your
text. Rate yourself and your current competencies using the following
checklist in order to determine your level of educational technology literacy
at the beginning, middle and end of this course. Place an X in the space next
to the competency you exhibit. You will revisit this two more times during the
semester. It is completely normal to feel that you have some competencies
and not others! After checking which competencies you possess, please
reflect on your level of competency in relationship to the categories listed
and what you can do to further develop that competency this semester. Each
competency that you checked needs to be addressed in your reflection. Note
that there are three sections of competencies in this document. Be sure to
scroll all the way to the bottom.

In the past, educational technology was comprised of audiovisual
equipment such as a tape recorder or videocassette player. Soon after, it
was discovered that films incorporating sound and images could be used to

teach as well. During WWII, technologies such as the overhead projector,


slide projector and simulators were added to the technology repertoire. In
the 1950s, the widespread use of the television helped to spur the
education technology advancement. Since then, the advent of powerful
and inexpensive computers have offered teachers an amazing array of
teaching and learning support media from which to choose. (Lever-Duffy &
McDonald, p. 39-40, 2011)
To further my competencies this semester in this area, I plan on completing
my assigned readings and exploring other websites that will allow me to
correlate educational technology with standards that I will be responsible
for teaching.

Technology is rapidly changing and allowing communication between others
to rapidly increase. As a practicing educator I'm aware of the full
responsibility to act in a professional manner. To abide by the codes and
ethics of communication in technology, I fully understand what is required
of me to report any issues of harassment, sexual mis-behavior, and cyber
bullying in technology.
Middle:

The ability to develop my skills with technology will help me to teach and
train others how to model technology in the classroom. Learning how to
facilitate the different learning styles of students can encourage innovative
thinking. I've learned that technology can encourage students to engage
and learn more effectively. Creating ways to critically and analytically think
about lesson plans and standards required in a classroom will promote
growth. I'm aware of the positive and negative effects of technology, but by
meeting NETS standards I can accomplish positive development by creating
and designing effective plans.

Technology has an increasingly great issue with social, ethical, and legal
safety. I'm aware of the surrounding issues with technology and that it is my
responsibility to educate and teach my students how to properly use it. I
understand as a future educator the precautions and risks using
technology, but also the abilities and opportunities technology offer. I will
ensure the technology we use in a classroom will be administered
appropriately.

Today, technology has boosted our ability to communicate and collaborate
in a variety of ways. There are many ways to share information and ideas. I
can use the resources online to successfully design, develop and create
plans for my classroom.We can research what other schools and
communities are teaching, and I can learn from those communities to help
promote and develop my students. It can speed up our learning by gaining
access to information, lessons, and ideas quickly.
Middle:

I've learned how quickly technology is advancing today, but I've learned
how technology has drastically changed they way we teach. Searching the
world wide web has allowed me to discover many great resources to help
teach more effectively. I now have access to hundreds of templates and
lesson plans that I can integrate into the classroom today. I can
comprehend effective instruction and behaviors of my students growth with
technology. I can include the standards and objectives needed for
technology in each lesson, and understanding those that are learning by
being engaged in how they learn and what they need to learn. I can identify
different strategies and different technologies that will be most beneficial to
developing each student.

I am able to effectively use technology to manage my classroom. The skills
I've acquired using Excel, PowerPoint and Word will help instruct more
efficiently. I can create and design creative lessons plans using Word. I can
present information using PowerPoint and address most of my lessons using
this digital tool. Excel will help me keep track of grades, create club

budgets, etc. These digital tools will help me in creating a positive learning
environment and support my classroom.

I believe I can use the software that is available to me effectively. With the
ability to use this technology it can help me provide a lot of formative ways
to engage my students daily.

I can begin implementing technology to frame each lesson into my daily


plan. I have the ability to use many free resources and basic software to
help continue developing a diverse group of students. I can begin including
technology into the classroom that will assist the gifted, special need
students, second language students and more.

I believe I have the tools and ability to create an instructional lesson plan
effectively, but I have yet to do that. I can lead by example and continue
using my classroom website, e-portfolio, and digital tools in the classroom
to promote the use of technology. The technology that I am able to use will
help me develop communication and support learning for my students.
