Annotated Bibliography: Representative Democracy
Berry, Craig. "Young People and the Ageing Electorate: Breaking the Unwritten Rule of
Representative Democracy." Oxford Journals. Oxford UniversityPress on Behalf of the
Hansard Society, 4 Nov. 2012. Web.
In this source it portrays a different view of a representative democracy. The author
undermines the demographic content in which a representative government has
developed over its lifetime. The author believes the type of government has developed
over time in a pyramid shape, which shows the age distribution in a representative
democracy which over all affects; the voter turnout, and age variation in voter groups.
The author believes that the difference in age group amongst the voters helps the
representative democracy by decreasing the possibility of over representation. This
source is not very reliable because it is from an author who is opinionated and has made
up his own theory from his observations over the past years of a representative
democracy.
Kateb, George. "The Moral Distinctiveness of Representative Democracy." ERIC. Speeches/
Meeting Papers; Opinion Papers, 3 Sept. 1979. Web. 30 Sept. 2014
In this paper, the author investigates and discovers the characters of a representative
democracy, which ultimately show what sets this government apart from other types of
government. The author says Representative democracy encourages citizens to adopt

distinctive attitudes toward conduct, self-concept, and all authority in society as well as
authority in political matters. this show how the representative democracy runs and also
what it expects from its citizens. This source is credible because it is not opinionated but
more like a research paper which proves its own points. The paper comes from an
Institute of Educational Sciences website, since it comes from an educational institute
background, it is more reliable.
Marina Sitrin and Dario Azzellini (2014), They Cant Represent Us: Reinventing Democracy
from Greece to Occupy(with a foreword by David Harvey). London and New York:
Verso.
This source shows a completely opposite view of what a representative democracy. This
article is against a representative democracy and the author believes it does not work and
has never worked. The author believes there is a crises in a representative democracy
and that its time to change. He says people are willing to govern themselves, and initial
changes could return in the form of a participatory democracy. This source is reliable
because it shows the views of actual people on how democracy has or has not worked in
their own experiences. The source is from a website that is used to educate the people
about popular events going on in the world.
Wilson, Mike. Democracy: Opposing Viewpoints. Farmington Hills, MI: Greenhaven/Thomson
Gale, 2006. Print.
In this book source there are many different essays which portray opposing view points
of democracy from over time and throughout the world. This source is different than the
other sources because it doesnt only show a couple different essay, but is filled with
many different essays which show opposing view points of representative democracy all

the way from; the reform of U.S. elections to the relationships between religion and
democracy. Since this book has been published I find it very reliable and credible
because

in gives you insights on all the different views on a representative democracy. It

shows

what works and what doesnt work. It portrays every aspect of the things that are
involved with a representative democracy and what interests the people about

what they

need to know about this type of government.
