Extended Inquiry Part 3

The thing I would like to complete on my bucket list is go to the World Cup. I
chose this event because I am an avid soccer fan and have played the sport for years,
and going would be a dream come true. I plan on going sometime in the near future
when I have fewer priorities such as school and work.
I found out that the World Cup is definitely something worth doing and is
somewhat obtainable. The most important thing to note is the travel costs depending
on the location. Typically I would rather go the World Cup while its in America, simply
because I feel more comfortable in a country that I know is safe. I also discovered that
the 1994 World Cup was the first time the United States hosted the event. Additionally,
due to the nature of its fans for the stars, the game of soccer has seen more riots and
brawls than any other sport. Soccer overtime has become the world's most popular
sport. Soccer has resisted the interference of politicians, dictators, and profiteers and more recently - the demands of television, through which it has reached every corner of
the globe (Murray, W. J. The World's Game: A History of Soccer).

This is an event worth doing because the World Cup is one the most prolific

sporting events in the world, competing with the Olympics. Eugene Van Vuuren has
also said that this an exciting event in his book of the same name (Van Vuuren, Eugene
The 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa: an Overview of This Exciting Event : 2010 Fifa
World Cup). What some people don't realize about the World Cup is that it is a huge
culture shock. People from all over the world come to the host nation to express their
pride for their respective nation. You are able to connect with these people, experience
new things, and have a great time outside of actually watching the games. This event is

also worth doing because you don't need to go with someone to enjoy the
event. Obviously having somebody accompany you makes the experience more
enjoyable but the atmosphere while inside the venue during the game renders that
almost irrelevant. It is surprisingly easy for sports fans to become friends (or enemies)
simply because there is always something to talk about and a connection is formed
instantly.
As previously stated, the World Cup is the most popular and one of the most
important sporting events in the world. Not only because it unites the world in one place
but also because the World Cup increases trading among the participating nations. A
study was conducted to analyze the trading effects of the FIFA World Cup in two
dimensions. First, that participating in the World Cup significantly increased exports
from the participant countries to the host countries, relative to a control group of nonparticipants. Second, to demonstrate that trade is reasonably higher for host participant
pairs compared to other country pairs (Avsar, Veysel, and Umut Unal. Trading Effects of
the Fifa World Cup).
Originally, the main focus of this bucket list item was simply to go and be able to
say that the item was completed. However, after some research, I found that the
reason for wanting to complete this item is the overall experience. Simply attending a
game and not enjoying the venue is a waste in my opinion, as there is so much going
on and the hype of the event is unlike anything (besides the Olympics).
This event relates to Into the Wild well. Chris McCandless, before his death in Alaska,
traversed the country and experienced new things ranging from leather engraving,
kayaking, and many other things. As previously stated, going to the World Cup allows

anyone attending to experience new things, which potentially allows them to cross off
other items from their bucket list.
