I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
The main focus of this lesson is for the students to better understand how the Underground Railroad worked and operated.
How does this lesson tie in to your Big Idea
This lesson ties into the Big Idea by giving the students a different perspective on how the Underground Railroad was operated by
the heroes they learned about.
What are your objectives for this lesson? (students will be able to.) Indicate connections to applicable national or state
standards (glces). Indicate themes from any threads addressed in this lesson (ex-Geography-human environment interaction)
1) Students will be able to use literature at a primary level to convey the ingenious ways oppressed people sought to seek freedom.
2) Students will be able to connect the context of a reading passage to a real-world experience.
3) Students will be able to use visual arts to illustrate a secret code in a quilt
4) Students will be able to present their quilt and discuss the secret code embedded in it.

1. Discuss some background on a slave s life, the hard work, family life, and the desire to be free.

Read Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson.


Discuss the idea that a quilt could be used as a map.
Discuss the importance of using coded pictures to convey the path.
Connect this to the simulation.
Have the children share the secretly coded pictures used in Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt..
Have the children divide into groups of 4.
Each student must create their own quilt square with the pattern they want on the paper. All 4 of
the group members squares should be able to get put together to create a secret message/map.
Start measuring, cutting and arranging fabric to match the design they made on the paper,
keeping in mind to leave 2 cm on each edge so it can get sown together.
As a group, prepare a presentation about their quilt and the secret coded places that they
included.
Allow each group to present their quilt paper squares. (as the actual quilt wont be ready yet.
