fascinating facts and wonders. You will meet a

these waters. All you have to do is visit the
next slide to find out more!

Great-White Sharks

Did you know: Great

White Sharks can
detect a drip of blood
in a 25 gallon bucket
of water.

Profile:
o Type- Fish
o Diet- Carnivorous (only eats meat)
o Size- 15ft to 20 ft
o Weight- 5,000 lbs. or more
o Go in groups called schools or shoals
o Protection Status- Endangered
The great white sharks is not as scary in reality than in our imaginations. Scientific Research
shows that the great whites image as mindless killing machines is beginning to disappear.
New research finds that great white sharks, who are naturally curious, are sample-biting
then releasing victims rather than preying on humans. These sharks are also the largest
predatory fish on earth. They have slate-gray upper bodies that help them camouflage in the
rocky coastal sea floor, but the great white shark gets its name fro its white under bellies.

Humpback Whales

These whales are very social. In fact, their songs can be heard from miles away.
They can weigh up to 30-40 tons, based on their region. (30-tropical; 40-cooler)
Humpback whales can consume up to 3,000 lbs. of food a day.
They can swim up to 9 mph and sometimes even 16 mph
Humpback whales have baleen, which are plates of whalebone in their mouth that
replace teeth.

Humpback whales are the most known whale type. They can live up to 50
years is they are protected correctly. These whales can migrate long distances, up
to 600 miles or more. Humpbacks are mammals that can be found in every single
ocean in the world. If spotted, they are mostly found at the surface of the ocean.
Due to their vast size, adults can be 12-16 metres. (100 sq. meters= 1 metre)
Humpback whales are in fact vulnerable and on the way to possible extinction.

Amazonian Manatees
Amazonian Manatees only live in bodies of fresh water.
There skin is very wrinkly and more brown in color than
gray.
Their eating habits are different than other species. During
rainy season they feed on types of plants that grow rapidly.
During this part of the year they eat more than they would
normally eat. This is the key to their survival, to fast for
weeks or months during dry season.
Even though they eat so much, it is still common for the
Amazonian Manatee to starve to death. When soil erodes,
it means new plant life can grow , making it harder to find
food. Humans also make it worse due to the process of
deforestation and hunting. They mate mostly during the
months of January and June.

Northern Elephant Seals

Females can weigh 1,700 pounds; Males weigh an average of 5,000
pounds
They can be found from California, USA to Central Mexico.
Their diet consists of small sharks, flatfish, ratfish, crab, squid an
octopus.
Ocean predators- Bigger sharks, killer whales (no land predators)

Northern Elephant Seals are one of four seal species that have an
epidermal molt the shed of the first layer of skin and fur. The skin
and fur comes off in sheets wile new skin and fur replaces the old.
The estimated amount in all is a 127,000. In California, they are said
to be 101,000 seals; In Mexico, there happens to be 26,000. In
1900, it was believed that only a 100 Northern Elephant Seals
remained. Also, El Nino may cause high mortality being high
subject do death with pups because of high tides washing pups
into the ocean before they are ready to swim.

Maui Dolphin
The Maui dolphin has a population of 55 left in the oceans
around the world.
Maui dolphins are about 4-6 feet and weigh about 95-115
pounds.
The Maui dolphins have light gray sides and backs with
white and black lines and markings.
Maui dolphins, also called Popoto or hector dolphins,
are the worlds rarest dolphin species. They are found off
the west coast of North Island in New Zealand. To give an
idea on how small they actually are, they can fit in a
bathtub. This species of dolphin is easily spotted because of
their rounded dorsal fin hat looks like a Mickey Mouse ear.

Painted Turtles
They live in most of the United States and Southern
Canada.
They are 4-10 inches, with females being larger than
males.
They mostly live in slow moving shallow waters, like
ponds marshes and lakes.
They are carnivorous when at a young age and
become more herbivorous as they become adults.
Painted turtles diets can include earthworms, crayfish,
slugs, and plants. They are also the most wide-spread
species of turtles in North America.

Conclusion
We hope you enjoyed our power-point! There
were so many interesting facts that even we
didnt know until we researched this animals. As
you may know already the Amazonian Manatee
and the Painted Turtle do not live in the ocean
but we still decided to include them in our
website because they are endangered species
and just because they dont live in the ocean,
doesnt mean they dont need help to keep their
species alive. Hope you enjoyed!
