Online Learning and Gifted Students

The article, Beyond the Classroom Walls discusses how online learning for K-12 is
growing rapidly. Every student, gifted or non-gifted is different and everyone learns so
differently. The article discusses two studies comparing the personality based learning styles of
gifted and non-gifted students. The learning style preferences were based off of Dunn, Dunn, and
Prices Learning Style Inventory (Thomson, 2010, p. 664). The research indicated that online
learning is highly effective for gifted students (Thomson, 2010, p. 707).
This article is of great importance because as teachers we need to recognize the learning
styles of all different kinds of gifted students. We also need to be able to find solutions so that
they are being challenged. One way that you could use the information from this article is by
using the flipped classroom strategy to differentiate for gifted students whose learning styles fit
the description mentioned in the article. Not only is the information on gifted students helpful,
but the article also contains great resources on learning style inventories to use for all of your
students.
Quality Online Education
The journal, Teaching in the World of K-12 Virtual Education takes a closer look at
what online learning is really like. As online learning is a new frontier, there are few regulations
and rules for how it should be done. This article looks at what kind of regulations do exist for the
virtual learning world (Natale, 2011, p. 6). While it is still new, it is expected to grow even more
quickly as time goes on (Natale, 2011, p. 36).

ONLINE LEARNING ARTICLE REVIEW

This article is very important because it evaluates online learning and the progress it has
made. This is a crucial time to take a look at what virtual learning is like because it is about to
grow. I will use what I learned in this article as a reference for what is considered effective
strategy if I ever incorporate an online component as a teacher. I am sure that this will become
more relevant as time goes on.
Advanced Placement Students in Rural Towns
The article, Supporting Online Learning for Advanced Placement Students in
Small Rural Schools talks about the interventions that can be used in small rural schools that do
not have a lot of resources for advanced placement students. The biggest shortage is in finding
teachers for advanced courses. The article looks at an online program called Facilitator
Preparation Program. The program was shown to be very successful from the study (Irvin,
Hannum, Farmer, de la Varre, Keane, 2009).
This was a very helpful article because we may not all teach in schools with the resources
to teach and challenge all of the advanced students. We can learn from this program as teachers
and apply the strategies of online learning wherever we are. I will be able to use the information
in this article to deal with possible challenges in integrating online learning into the classroom.
The article addresses very important aspects of the social impact of the classroom.
