Thisartifactisalettersenttofamilieswhohadparticipantsinthe201415PioneerFutsal
Academy.TheAcademywasanindoorsoccercampforplayersaged818putonbymyself
andUWPlattevilleheadmenssoccercoachEnzoFuschino.Thecampwasdividedinto
threesessionslastingonehourpersessionwhichwereheldonSundaysoverthespanof14
weeks.Attendanceofeachhourlongsessionwaslimitedto20playersandtherewere
typicallyfourcoachespresenttoensureasmallcoachtoplayerratio.CoachFuschinoandI
wouldoftenplanthecontentofthetrainingsessiontogether,andwewerebothresponsible
forrunningvariouspartsofeachsession.Whenonecoachwasleadingduringasession,the
othercoacheswereresponsiblefordoingthingslikeoneononeworkwithplayershandling
practiceequipmentlikeconesandpinnies.Thisartifactdocumentsmyparticipationwiththe
Academy.

tenbecauseitdemonstratesmyabilitytocollaboratewithothereducators(inthisinstance,an
agencyinthelargercommunity)inthedomainsofpreparationandinstruction.Coach
FuschinoandIplannedthetopicsandactivitiesofourtrainingsessionstogether,andwe
deliveredeachsessioninamannersimilartocoteachinginanacademicclassroom.

communities.

Reflection

WhatIlearnedaboutteaching/learning:
MuchofwhatIlearnedthroughthisexperiencehadtodowithcollaborativeteaching.
Specifically,Ilearnedaboutdividingandassumingresponsibilitieswhenoperatingasa
memberofaninstructionalteam.Operatingasamemberofacoteachingteamisdifferent
thanbeingthesoleinstructor.Youhavetotakeintoaccountthegoalsoftheotherinstructor,
andyoumayhavetocompromisesomeofyourowngoals.Whenyouretheleadinstructor,
youhavetohelpdelegateresponsibilitiestotheotherinstructor(s)responsibilitieslike
oneononeworkandhandlingequipment.Whenyourenottheleadinstructorofaparticular
lesson/session,youhavetofindothernicheresponsibilities,likebeingthepersontowork
oneononewithastudent,ormakingsureequipmentisproperlyarrangedforthelead
instructor.

WhatIlearnedaboutmyselfasaprospectiveeducator:
IlearnedthatIoftenhavetoworkharderasthesupportinginstructorthanIdoasthelead
instructorbecauseIdonthaveasmuchpracticebeingasupportingrole.Settinggoalsand
planninginstructionissomethingthat,bynow,Ivehadalotofpracticewith.Itcomes
naturallytome.InmyexperiencewiththeAcademy,however,thesetaskswereprimarilythe
responsibilityoftheleadinstructor.Itwasharderformetoassumetheroleofthesupporting
instructorbecauseIhadtofigureoutandworktowardthegoalsofanotherinstructor.Beinga
goodsupportinginstructorinacoteachingformatissomethingIwillneedtocontinuetowork
on,iffornootherreasonthanIjustdonthaveasmuchpracticedoingit.
