Rationale
I wish to introduce myself and get to know the students, thus creating a positive working environment
within the classroom. Through a quick PowerPoint presentation I wish to outline a six week plan with
the students in relation to the content we will be covering. I will get to know the class through an ice
breaker game. The students are fully aware of the rules and routines in place within the school and I
hope to add a few of my own. I feel the best way to abide by the rules is to firstly understand them and
what better way is there to identify the rules than a collaborative poster making competition. Not alone
do I wish to introduce myself to the class and put in place a sound foundation between teacher and
student but I also want to begin some theory leading on from the topics discussed before Christmas.

Aims
The aims of this lesson are to:

Present myself to the class and state my purpose.

State and discuss the six week plan and procedure.
Clarify rules and routines regarding health and safety and misbehaviour on the entrance and
exit of the classroom.
Explore growth and structure of trees including cell structure.
Establish a healthy relationship between teacher and students.

Literacy
Strategies
Poster Making using old
newspapers where the
student has to form words
and evidently sentences
using letters from the
newspaper.
New words will be put into
the New Word Drum for
later lesson recapping.

Numeracy
Strategies

Oracy
Strategies

The students will use

their numeracy skills
when sub-dividing
into groups for
collaborative poster
making.

Discuss the class plan

with peers and the
teacher.
Get to Know each
other by Ice breaker
game.
Group leader is
required to present
the poster to the class
and teacher then give
a brief account of
their piece of work.

Graphicacy
Strategies
Designing posters.
Identifying pictures of
wood properties and
characteristics
associated with cell
structure.
PowerPoint of furniture
designers that the
students can get
inspiration from.

Differentiation Strategies
Gender Inclusion

a) Use inclusive phrases to address class.

b) Give an example of a male and female woodwork designer in
PowerPoint.
c) Divide into group equally, diverse mix of students.

Multicultural Inclusion

a) There are currently no non-national students within this

class. Multicultural inclusion is not an issue.

Special Needs Strategies

a) There are currently no SEN students within the class. I have

read extra material on how to identify a SEN student if
problem arises.

Mixed ability Teaching

Strategies.

a) Supportive learning environment.

b) Peer teaching through group work.
c) The poster allows the students to design too their own
capabilities.

developing oracy skills.

the

class

thus

4. Experiment with new materials and design

ideas.
5. Assess their timing skills.

2. Discussion with peers monitored by

the teacher (students bounce ideas off
each other).
3. Class presentation, group leader
presents the groups poster and
discusses the rule and where they got
