Observed Lesson 3
3rd Grade ICT Class
Math Unit of Study: Algebra
Purpose:
The purpose of this lesson is to teach students another way to see multiplication
or skip counting. Students need to understand the relationship of the two factors
in a multiplication. Students need to understand how to show a
multiplication
problem using a table.
Vocabulary:
1) Patterns
Objectives:
Students will identify and describe a number pattern.
Students will show the number pattern in a function table.
Essential Questions:
What are some ways you can describe a pattern?
How can you describe a pattern in a table?
Enduring Understanding:
Mathematicians will use multiplication facts, place value, and properties to solve
multiplication problems.
Domains:
1) Operations and Algebraic Thinking
2) Numbers and Operations in Base Ten

Common Core Learning Standards:

Math: 3.OA.3, 3.OA.7, 3.OA.9
Pre Assessment:
Students will get an introduction to the chapter during homeroom. The
introduction to the lesson is the Show What You Know section in their math text

books. It assesses what they already know about the different portions of the
chapter as well as the vocabulary. Teachers will walk around the room and
determine what they know about the lesson.
Lesson Presentation:
Set Induction:
Students will take out their math notebooks. They will gateher around the smart
board. The teacher will put a few questions on the board to access their prior
knowledge. Students will take turns answering the questions and writing them on
the smart board.

Procedure:
Mini Lesson (Whole Class): After the teacher accesses the students prior
knowledge, they will go back to their seats. They will open their math textbooks
to chapter 5 lesson 1. The will read the essential question out loud. The
teacher will do the first problem on the page with the class as a whole on the
smart board. The first questions is titled Unlock the Problem. The teacher
will have students take turns coming to the smart board to answer the questions
in the problem. Once the problem is done, teacher will break the class up into
three pre-determined groups. Each of the groups will be given different
assignments.
Group 1 (Top Third): These students will go back to their desks. They will work
by themselves to complete the rest of the lesson. They will be assigned to page
183 in their text books. After the complete page 183, they will be given an
enriched worksheet to complete. Rationale: These students understand the
basic concept of the lesson. They will work on problems that will push them and
enrich them. The enrich worksheet is word problems. They will be challenged
with the word problems and it gives them an opportunity to use high order
thinking.
Group 2 (SDWs, Middle Group, Ls): Students will go to a small group by the
library and work with Mrs. Aslanian. They will start on page 182. The teacher
will
walk them through how to do the problems on page 182. If they finish, they will
work in partnerships in the small group, but stay where they are. They will do
page 183 with their partner. They will be monitored by the teacher and if they
struggle on page 182, they will do 183 with the teacher. Rationale: These

students need to be monitored by a teacher, but do not need intensive

intervention. They work best in small groups and partnerships.
Group 3 (Bottom Third, SWDs): Students will come gather around the smart
board. They will work with Ms Quinn. They will start with a worksheet of the
re-teach of the lesson. The teacher will model it on the smart board for the class.
They will work through the lesson with the teacher. After they finish re-teach,
they will do page 182 as a small group. They will be guided by the teacher, but it
will not be modeled for them. If they finish page 182 with time left, they will do
one or two problems on page 183 with a partner and the teachers help.
Rationale: These students need more one on one help. They are doing the
re-teach so that they can grasp the concept of the lesson before moving on.
They work well in a small group with teacher assistance.
Closure:
Students will go back to their seats. The teacher will put a problem on the board
that is similar to what they have been working on all period. They will turn and
talk to a partner and explain how they would solve it. Then the teacher will call
up a partnership to explain it to the class using the smart board.
Materials and Resources:
Math Textbooks
Smart Board
Power Point
Enrich Worksheet
Re-Teach Worksheet
Follow Up Activity:
Students will review the problems that were put on the board for tomorrows
lessons Set Induction.
Evaluation/ Assessment:
Teacher will grade students homework that is directly related to the lesson.
Differentiation:
