Twenty-one days of learning

These first twenty one days of class I would say we learned quite a bit. Well I know I did.
I believe I took a huge interest in this English class from the very beginning. Partly because I
was trying to get in the class I didn't have to be there like all my other classmates. For the most
part the first day of class was very interesting. Mrs. Priest grabbed attention immediately. Right
then I knew this class would make me a better student not just a writer. That I could also take
almost everything I learned from it into the real world.

APA Format
The first week of class I remember learning about APA format. I was thinking what's up
with all of these different types of formats we have to know with me being used to MLA. Mrs.
Priest teaching methods were so good, learned it easy. We went over everything from the cover
page, reference page, how to do the correct headers, font, font size and how to write in 3rd
person. Later that week in my psychology professor introduced the class to APA format. I was
the only one that knew anything about it. So I look like a genius it was a huge confidence
builder. The titles in APA is sentence capitalization for example The golden age of
neuroscience has arrived. You never use you unless it is a direct quote.
End-Text References.
Alphabetical. APA format references must be arranged in alphabetical order by the
surname of the first author.
Hanging indents. All APA citations should use hanging indents, that is, the first line of
an entry should be flush left and the second and subsequent lines should be indented 1/2.
In-Text Refererence. In-text citation is used when source material is quoted, paraphrased. Intext provide at least the authors last name and the year of publication.

Six Traits of Writing

That same week I also remember us learning about the Six Straits of Writing. These
straits will not only help me out in this class but probably every class I have a writing assignment
or paper due for the rest of my college career. The straits are ideals, organization, voice, word
choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. My favorite one is organization, you can never ask
your reader to do the work so therefor you have to guide them. Sentence fluency would be the
one I think I need to work on because language is music.

Six Word Memoirs

I think the Six Word Memoir was the most creative assignment we have done. You can
tell a story using six words. I think it kind of teaches you to trim down your sentences. When you
think about it a lot of famous sayings are six word memoirs. Like It All Changed in an Instant.
So it basically sums things up.
Snipping tools
Learning how to using snipping tool was very helpful. Not only for this class and that
assignment. Just knowing how to use it period, one of those things I wish I knew a long time ago.
It allows you to copy from sites that do not let you cut or copy. Which is very valuable when you
are making a PowerPoint or a video on Animoto. I am using snipping tools now in my music
class for this PowerPoint.
Ellipsis quotes
Just recently I learned the correct way to do ellipsis quotes and make sure they are not
hanging quotes. Even though it was the toughest way to learn the lesson I finally got it. I actually

like adding in my own words to quotes. I think of it as adding my signature to the quote. The
three spaced dots come in handy when you use an extremely long quote. Three dots in quotations
means that something has been taken out.
