Case 1

Kelly, Baylee, and Kristin

1. Overview of the Lesson
In this lesson, students will be introduced to past tense irregular verbs. They will be given
a vocabulary list to memorize, participate in a few activities, and be given homework for
assessment.
2.
Description of Learners, Intended Learning Goals, and Lesson Content
The students in this class are non-native English speakers living in Bogot, Colombia
where Spanish is their first language. They have had 2 to 3 years of English experience,
but they have only learned in the classroom environment. They are low to moderately
low ability levels and are only 12- 14 years old, or 6th and 7th graders. There is a mix of
boys and girls in each class with about 25 students each period, so it is important to
maintain attention and keep them engaged in the content. The intended outcome of this
lesson is for students to recognize irregular past tense verbs when they are written in
sentence and also begin to use them in their own sentence construction. In order to keep
them engaged, the lesson will be taught using a lot of student involvement. The lesson
will require volunteers to participate in verb conjugation on the board and then they will
work in groups to analyze a song from American culture, trying to locate all of the
irregular verbs.
3.
Learning Objectives
a.
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to identify irregular past tense verbs in a
written sentence.
b.
Given the infinitive form of a verb, students will be able to identify whether it is regular
or irregular and conjugate it accordingly.
c.
Students will be able to write the vocabulary words in a sentence in the past tense, when
given the infinitive form.
4.

Teaching the Lesson (should take around 15-20 minutes)
iii. Explain to the students that not all past tense verbs conjugate the same
way. Tell the students that for irregular verbs, there is not a specific rule to
make them past tense.
iv.
Pass out the attached list with the title - Past Tense Irregular Verbs List
v.
Go over each of the verbs on the list by saying each one aloud and having the students
repeat the word back to you. You may want to review the meaning of each word.
vi.
Give examples of how these verbs are used in a sentence. (example: I drank water
yesterday.)
vii.
Have a few students volunteer to try and use the irregular past tense verbs in a sentence.
They can choose one from the list and make their own sentence (spoken or written on the board).
viii.
Tell the students again that there are no specific rules for past tense irregulars, and it will
be important for them to memorize the list that was passed out at the beginning of the lesson.
ix.
Answer any questions the students may have about the lesson.
Supplemental Instruction/ Assessment (should take around 10 minutes)
x. Pass out the lyrics to the song Pompeii by Bastille. (Lyrics can be found in
attached worksheet Pompeii.)

Tell the students that this a popular song in the United States with many past tense
verbs. (Optional: You could use this to integrate a small lesson on pop-culture and music in
America, see reference materials for examples)

xii.
Tell them that as the song plays, they should underline any verbs that they think are past
tense irregular and circle any past tense regular verbs.
xiii.
Play the song on computer with speaker. (Optional: If you do not want to solely play the
music, you can show the music video as well. Link to video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F90Cw4l-8NY.)
xiv.
Collect the lyrics from each student (Optional: You may choose whether or not to grade
this; it can be graded for completion or for accuracy.)

Pass out homework before students leave class. (Worksheet - Irregular Past Tense
Verbs)

Assessment
The students will be assessed with a worksheet. This worksheet has three sections, each
using the verbs in a different way. The assessment can be given as homework or as an
in-class assignment. The students can work alone or in groups. The worksheet is attached

APA style references
Z. I. Amankulova and S. K. Seisembieva (2011). Teaching English as a Foreign
Language. Central and Eastern European Online Library, 1(2), 271-279.
This article focuses on the behavior of a teacher who is teaching English as a second
language. It mentions how to discipline, a mix between being fair, clear, and consistent. The
article also touches on appearance and behavior. Finally, the article teaches teachers how to mix
up their teaching style to fully immerse the students in the new language. A good teacher uses
listening, speaking, writing, and full class activities to get all the students engaged. It is not
necessary to use all these methods in one class period, but rather switch it up from time to time.
Because of this article, we decided to have a writing portion of our lesson plan (worksheet), a
listening portion (song), and a speaking portion (repeating the words).
Nomass, B. B. (2013). The impact of using technology in teaching english as a second language.
English Language and Literature Studies, 3(1), 111-116.
Technology is very important in a classroom, as this article states. It shows how using
technology is very important for an ESL teacher, as hearing others speak the words is just as
important as hearing the teacher speak the words. The article mentions using technology such as

voice recorders, electronic dictionaries, writing e-mails, and using computers. Their research
shows that 83% of students believe that using a computer would help their listening skills. For
this reason, we decided to use a song played from the computer to help our students with their
listening.

Pompeii by Bastille
Eh-eh-o eh-o
I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices

In your pose as the dust settled around us
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
Eh-eh-o eh-o
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
And the walls kept tumbling down (oh where do we begin?)
In the city that we love (the rubble or our sins?)
Great clouds roll over the hills (oh where do we begin?)
Bringing darkness from above (the rubble or our sins?)
But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
