Rhetorical Analysis

For the PSA (Public Service Announcement) assignment, our group decided that we
wanted to help raise awareness on not only how expensive college tuition already is, but also on
how the tuition is gradually increasing over time and coincidentally state funding is decresing.
Lowering tuition prices is both a very long and difficult process. However, getting the
community of students involved and aware of the situation is the first step that needs to be
addressed. There was no better place to help start raising awareness than our very own Salt Lake
Community College, Taylorsville Campus.
Too often students will drop out instead of continuing to pursue a college education due
to the high price of tuition. Many times we have all heard the statement college is just too
much. Well the truth of the matter is that the price of tuition is usually too much or too
expensive for everyone.
As a group, we wanted to raise awareness in the community of students that tuition is too
expensive, no matter what their personal circumstances are. We want all students to know that
they are not alone. Therefore, we decided to bring everyone together and start a petition. Starting
a petition not only shows support from the individuals signing it, but it shows both the supporter

and audience that everyone from different situations is agreeing that the tuition prices are too
high. On top of a petition, there is also a Facebook page in which we encouraged people to stay
in contact with. On the page, they will be able to keep up with all the statistics and the events that
will take place in the near future regarding the price of tuition. To help us get in contact with
other students, we set up a table at SLCC and put up a display to help them to actually see the
different aspects and statistics, as well as roamed around campus speaking with anyone we
could.
Raising awareness in our community of students can very well help prevent many
students from dropping out. When individuals start taking it personal, and think that they are the
only ones getting in large amounts of debt because they cannot afford it, they begin to believe
that college is not for them and they generally dropout. It is very critical that these individuals
are aware that the majority of college students are falling into large amounts of debt as well. This
aspect alone can help prevent a large amount of students from dropping out, and thats why as a
group we decided to help raise awareness.
