Professionalism

Collaborative Practice
I believe the whole group displayed the professionalism concept of
collaborative practice. I was really nervous coming in to this semesters clinical.
Maternity is something new to me. Caring for a mother and a baby is a different
ballgame when compared to past experiences in long term care and med-surg. They
require their own set of assessments, which can be quite intimidating to the unexperienced nurse. I am glad that we were able to pair up this week. It kind of eases
some the tension and nervousness, knowing that my peer is having the same
thoughts as I am. We all displayed the professionalism concept of collaborative
practice as we helped each other out in navigating through the complex MAR
system. We coached each other on the mother and baby assessments. My peers and I
helped each other, and through collaboration, the experiences gained were much
more valuable.

Safety
Communication with client and families
Assessing mother and new-born requires communication between the nurse
and patients. I displayed the safety concept of communication with client this week.
Part of the assessment is gathering subjective information on the patient. Aside from
the objective head to assessments, my classmate and I had to ask questions in order
to gather more information. Information such as pain level, bladder discomfort, and
voiding patterns are things that only the client can provide. By opening and
preserving the lines of communication, client safety can be maintained.
