Rhetorical Situation and Genre

A. analyze, compose, and reflect on arguments in a variety of genres, considering the

strategies, claims, evidence, and various mediums and technologies that are appropriate
to the rhetorical situation
Rhetorical Situation and Genre is understood to be a study of using
language effectively to persuade, under a certain genre. In Major Writing
Assignment number one I learned how to analyze rhetorical situations in a
memoir, in Major Writing Assignment number two I learned how to analyze a
rhetorical situation using multimodal text, and in Major Writing Assignment
number three I learned how to compose a profile while considering strategies,
claims, and evidence in my blog.
I learned how to analyze a rhetorical situation. This includes identifying
the genre and then defining the topic, angle, and purpose. I used a memoir. A
memoir is essentially a story that is being told. This story has to be true, and it has
to have all the elements of a story like a ground situation, trigger, rising action,
climax, falling action, and resolution. In my high school English class we were
taught in depth about the elements of a story. In class lectures I learned about
analyzing a rhetorical situation and the ethical obligations that contribute to a
memoir. Chapters one through three in the book were also a helping tool on
Rhetorical Situations and Genre.
Multimodal text is a type of composition that combines text, images, and
sound to offer a coherent message to an audience. In class I learned how to
present a rhetorical situation into multimodal text. I learned that in a Powtoon it is
harder to convey a large amount of material while keeping the viewers attention.
It has taught me how to be brief but informative.
Profiles are used to introduce and highlight the essential characteristics of
a person, product, service, or program. My genre was a profile on the organization
Relay for Life. I learned how to write a profile while incorporating an interview.
In class I learned how to write a profile, and what a profile consists of, like quotes
and anecdotes. I also learned how to perform effectively in an interview.
This semester I learned what this outcome was and how to incorporate it
in different genres. It will be useful during the rest of my college education with
other college papers. Then later on, it could be useful in the working field with a
job interview or cover letter.

Writing as a Social Act

B. describe the social nature of composing, particularly the role of discourse communities at
the local, national, and international level
Writing as a Social Act is describing composing while in constant contact
with an audience. In Major Writing Assignment number one I learned what
writing as a social act meant and what a discourse community was, in Major
Writing Assignment number two I built on my previous knowledge about writing

as a social act with multimodal text, and in Major Writing Assignment number
three I learned how to write a blog and how to make it easily readable to a wide
variety of audiences.
In class I learned what a discourse community is. A discourse community
is a group that shares common languages, characteristics, patters, practices as a
consequence of ongoing community and identification with each other. On one of
the first days of classes we wrote down our best and worst dialects and then
discussed them. We also discussed different discourse communities and came up
with our own dialogue with our discourse communities. I learned that discourse
communities are everywhere, and everyone has their own language identity.
I used a Powtoon for my Major Writing Assignment number two
mutimodal. Powtoon is a basic style of text. As I worked on the Powtoon I had
trouble with the timing of the words. But it has taught me how to catch those
discourse communities attentions and how to keep it with brevity (as discussed in
Rhetorical Situation and Genre). In class I learned the basics of Powtoon. I used
the help button and the internet for help when creating the Powtoon.
I learned how to write a blog and how to incorporate pictures from
Weebly. Other classmates also helped me with their input. I tried to put bits and
pieces in my assignment that other/most people can relate to. In class we learned
what style was and what the different types were. High style is formal words with
high emotion, low style is plain or common words with low emotion, and middle
style is in-between high and low style. I would say my Major Writing Assignment
number two is middle style; it isnt super fancy but its not too mellow either.
All of my Major Writing Assignments have taught me and made me be
more aware of discourse communities. This has also helped me understand how to
incorporate my own language identity into my writing. This will be useful as I
continue college education.
Writing as a Process
C. use multiple approaches for planning, researching, prewriting, composing, assessing,
revising, editing, proofreading, collaborating, and incorporating feedback in order to
make your compositions stronger in various mediums and using multiple technologies
Writing as a Process is essentially the process of writing that helps make
the assignment stronger. It is not the product in the end but rather the process of
creating the product. In Major Writing Assignment number one I learned what
writing as a process was, in Major Writing Assignment number two and three I
built off of my previous knowledge of writing as a process.
The text book states that there are many steps to writing; there is analyzing
the situation, inventing ideas, organizing, choosing appropriate style, design of
document, and last but not least editing and revising. In Major Writing
Assignment number two I had a hard time analyzing which situation to use. The
in class peer review helped with the editing and revising portion of writing as a
process.
My journal number three helped me prepare and figure out what topic I
wanted to do. I used the Powtoon because it seemed interesting. I learned that

with the Powtoon you have to replay tid-bits of the pages and go back and edit
them over and over again. It is a time consuming process. Then the peer review
helped because it gave an outside look looking in.
My journal number five and six really helped me gather my ideas. I also
had to incorporate an interview into the process. In class we learned what to do
and what not to do in an interview. My interview was over email, and once I was
done with the interviewing process I started writing on Word. I also had many
peers review my paper, and give me their input. After I got the words down I
incorporated pictures.
This outcome is important to me because it helps to organize the steps in
writing the paper. It has definitely helped enhance the way I write and made me
realize how crucial the peer review is. This will help me in the long run with the
many papers to come in my college education.
Grammar and Usage
D. improve your fluency in the dialect of Standardized Written American English at the
level of the sentence, paragraph, and document
Grammar and Usage coincides with the Standardize Written American
English. Standardized Written American English is a mixture of grammar rules
and notions of correct and incorrect language. As a student I am expected to
wright in SAE, but I learned that language is tied with my identity or discourse
community. In Major Writing Assignment number one I learned how to improve
grammar and usage, in Major Writing Assignment number two I learned how to
present text in a multimodal text, and in Major Writing Assignment number three
I learned how to present my text in a different type of multimodal text.
I learn what Standardized American English was in high school and in
college. In high school it was stressed a lot more than it is in college. In college
they want students to write in their own dialects (when appropriate). The major
thing that really helped me with this assignment was the review in class on how to
do quotations properly.
I believe peer reviewing coincides with SAE. The peer review helped with
common grammatical errors that I had missed. In Major Writing Assignment
number two, I realized how important the peer review was; you get use to looking
at the text and start to skim over it instead of in depth looking. So a new set of
eyes will find common mistakes. I learned this lesson in my high school English
class as well in my college classes.
For my Major Writing Assignment number three I used a blog. On this
assignment I had trouble getting my piece to flow and be more coherent. I had
many peer reviewers, and they really helped me to make my piece coherent. I also
have had trouble with my tenses, and looking back at high school notes helped me
clear any misconceptions.

SAE will be very useful when I am required to write other papers in

college and well as in the working field. I feel like SAE is a good base to build off
of when writing.
E. analyze and describe the value of incorporating various languages, dialects, and registers
in your own and others texts
Analyzing and describing the value of incorporating various languages,
dialects, and registers in my own and others text are a big part of SAE. In Major
Writing Assignment number one I learned different dialects and how to write our
own dialects, in Major Writing Assignment number two, I learned that you cant
always follow SAE, and in Major Writing Assignment number three, I learned
how to effectively incorporate dialects and anecdotes.
Writing in Standardized American English can create closed doors
towards dialects and registers. There was a lot of in class free writes, and
activities that pinpointed dialects and registers. The lesson in class with registers
was also incorporated with the outcome. For example I talk to my friends
differently when compared to talking to a professor. This made me realized that
its ok to express yourself in your work and how to respect others in how they
express themselves through their writing.
In my Powtoon, I had to use a different form to present the text to it would
look coherent and be easier to read. I found that it was boring to read some parts
of my text. But, when I added some of my own registers, or not Standarized
American English, it was easier and more entertaining to read. In my Art History
class we were taught to put our own qualities into our papers because it was easier
to read.
In this assignment I was aiming for a friendly yet informative register. I
had learned how to effectively use an interview in my assignment while
incorporating registers in class. We learned how to do a profile in class with
biography handouts. I believe putting others dialect into the piece gives a more
feasible, sympathetic, and understanding view. It gives the piece a new voice or
face to the assignment, instead of your own voice or face.
This outcome has been very helpful to me. It has made me realize how to
incorporate my own and other registers into my assignments. This will be helpful
as I further my college education with writing.

Reflection

F. evaluate your development as a writer over the course of the semester and describe how
composing in multiple genres and mediums using various technologies can be applied in
other contexts to advance your goals
My development in writing has improved, especially in a technology
aspect. In Major Writing Assignment number one I learned how to reflect on my
own writings, in Major Writing Assignment number two I learned how to put
dialogue into a multimodal text, and in Major Writing Assignment number three, I
felt like I had a good base with multimodal text experience after Major Writing
Assignment number one and two.
Going back and looking at my Journal number one helped me to
remember what my own dialects were and how to incorporate them into my
Major Writing Assignment number one. In class we learned how to do a cover
letter. I also used CAPS to my advantage for feedback and editing on my paper.
This has taught me what works in my papers, what doesnt work, and what
resources I can use to my advantage.
Major Writing Assignment number two was a bigger jump for me when it
came to composing in multiple genres while using different technology. In my
Powtoon I learned that the text cant be too long because then its easy to lose the
viewers attention. Cutting the Fat, as my High School English Teacher would
call it, helped make my work concise. I had to do this throughout my Powtoon. I
learned that there are other and more interesting ways to present writings, like
Powtoons and Prezis.
I wanted to build off of my previous knowledge of multimodal text from
Major Writing Assigment number one and two. I wanted to try something new so
I could be more rounded in multimodal text and technology. This time I decided
to do a blog. It was really nice in this assignment to have lenience, because we
could be a little more creative.
After this semester I will have rounded genres and mediums while
incorporating multimodal text. The technology part will be very useful when I go
into the working field. I will be able to incorporate better technology in the
classroom.
Research
G. use writing and research as a means of discovery to examine your personal beliefs in the
context of multiple perspectives and to explore focused research questions through
various mediums and technologies
Using writing and research through various mediums and technology has
helped my further my personal beliefs. In Major Writing Assignment number one
I learned about how to incorporate my personal beliefs in my writing, in Major

Writing Assignment number two my beliefs helped me to judge what should go

into my topic and what shouldnt, and in in Major Writing Assignment number
three, I learned how to take researching to another level with an interview.
In class we watched a video that made us really think about our own
beliefs and values. It also helped us towards our beliefs in judgment in other
people and their own writings. This outcome is important to me because it helps
me to stay on track of my own beliefs while writing, and not somebody elses or
the societies ways or beliefs.
In my Major Writing Assignment number one there were some disputes
that went along with my topic but I felt like those disputes really didnt matter to
my topic. No matter if those disputes happened or not it is still a good
organization. I learned a lot about what I believe through the ethos and logos
lectures during class, and the videos. This has helped to find rhetoric and see what
I am being persuaded to believe.
In Major Writing Assignment number one I had to incorporate an
interview. In class we watched videos on interviews, and that helped me form
some of my own personal beliefs. Those personal beliefs helped me decide how I
wanted to go about while performing my interview. This has helped me express
my beliefs in my work in better manner than before.
This outcome will help me in everyday life and it will help me be more
aware of what I am forced to believe. This outcome is important to me because it
helps me to stay on track of my own beliefs while writing, and not somebody
elses or the societies ways or beliefs.
H. integrate others positions and perspectives into your writing ethically, appropriately, and
effectively in various mediums and technologies
Part of Research is integrating others positions and perspectives into my
own writing ethically and appropriately. In Major Writing Assignment number
one I learned how to use citations and how to put others positions and
perspectives into my own writing, in Major Writing Assignment number two I
enhanced my citation skills, and in Major Writing Assignment number three, like
Major Writing Assignment number one, I learned how incorporate others
positions and perspectives into my own writing.
I learned that each character has a voice in a memoir. But in order to use
that voice the use of citations has to be used properly. This was taught through
class lectures and through the video mentioned previously. This is important
because a memoir needs characters and voices and its up to the writer to use that
effectively and truthfully, especially in a memoir.

I also learned more about citations and the importance of them in class
lectures. Researching my topic has caused me to look at others perspective and
has had an influence on my perspective as well. The website that I got my topic
from, and the overall outcome and doings of that website, has influenced me and
has strengthened my beliefs.
I feel like this outcome really pertains to Major Writing Assignment
number three because we had to interview someone. Interviewing Jami gave my
paper a new personality and new insight. I also learned that putting anecdotes into
writing really helps complete a profile. It also makes it more enjoyable to read. I
believe this assignment has tremendously helped me with my writing skills. In
class we learned what an anecdote was and how to incorporate it into text.
This outcome will be very useful in my continuing education. I have
learned how to incorporate my own and other peoples beliefs into my
assignments. I will use ethics for the rest of my life.
