Dear Dr. Bruce,

The purpose of this letter is to demonstrate that I have effectively learned the six student
learning outcomes (SLOs) stated on the course syllabus. After reviewing my completed course
documents I have provided the documents which prove that I have become proficient in the six
SLOs. The documents that I have incorporated are: a resume, original and revised; results portion
of the recommendation report; a peer review; and a cover letter. These documents have been
selected to show my increasing improvements and understanding of the SLOs throughout the
semester.
The first document is a resume for the research position on the ifixit team project. Of all
of the major documents I chose to revise the resume. The original resume I submitted received
the lowest score and represents poor work on my behalf. It lacked evidence of my previous
research qualifications as well as proper spacing throughout the document. After revising, the
resume now satisfies more SLOs, the Academic Language and Design has been satisfied by
correcting the spacing and by using appropriate resume language such as starting the descriptions
with verbs. An example of this is shown under the work experience section on the resume. This
document also satisfies the formal writing part of the Rhetorical Focus SLO by providing a
formally written document to a specific audience. The revised resume satisfies the Persuasive
Argument SLO; a research experience section was added to the resume to persuade the audience
that I am capable of effectively doing the research needed for the position. This section includes
major research I have previously worked on. Finally, this document satisfies the Organization
and Focus SLO because its organized into categories with bullet points listed below describing
the subject in further detail. The way the resume is written gives the reader a clear understanding
of the material that is being presented.
An additional document that I have provided is the results portion of the recommendation
report. This document satisfies the Ethical Research and Organization and Focus SLOs. The
Ethical Research SLO is shown through the in text citations of the sources that were used; for
example, After reviewing these articles (Duke University, 2014; Foxwell, 2008) it was
determined that many different genres are used with the field depending on the area expertise the
professional is working in. This document also demonstrates the Organization and Focus SLO
by the way it is organized into subcategories which match to the same categories on other
sections of the report. The way the results are presented in categories gives the audience a clear
understanding of the information that is being presented to them.

The third document that was incorporated is a peer review of another students
recommendation report. The document satisfies the informal part of the Rhetorical Focus and
Collaboration SLOs. This documents purpose is to help inform another student of improvements
and corrections they can make to better their work. A rubric was used to show how effectively
they met the requirements and comments were added to the end of the rubrics categories to give
more detail on what they can do to improve their work, this can be seen on the last column of the
peer review. The comments that where given where written informally such as incomplete
sentences. There comments satisfy the informal part of the Rhetorical Focus SLO.
The final document that has been provided is this cover letter. I hope this letter allows
you to see that I have mastered the six SLOs through the different documents that I have
completed and have provided in my portfolio. I have gained knowledge on new types of writing
styles and have improved upon them throughout the semester. I know that mastering these SLOs
will greatly benefit me in the future.

Sincerely,

Aileen Beauchamp
