According to Curtis, Sheerin, and de Vries (2011), leadership is an important

component of nursing practice due to nurses are responsible for leading and managing the
health care environment and it can be effectively taught and integrated into nursing
through leadership education and training. It means that nurses should acknowledge the
role of the leader in the heath care field and they are responsible for developing
leadership skills. Fortunately, I have learned lots of leadership skills throughout my two
years of nursing program. Especially, I have learned leadership skills through observing
and imitating the behavior of other leaders during my clinical experiences. During the
clinical rotations, Ive encountered many good leaders and good followers. I think the
characteristics of good leaders are motivating people and getting them excited about their
contributions to group success through encouragement and inspiration. Moreover, good
leaders empower people to be accountable and make good decisions rather than just
delegating tasks and overseeing people. The characteristics of good followers are
establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships. Also, good followers are
responsible for their work. For example, good follower nurses are prepared for their shift.
Ive always thought being a good follower is as important as being a good leader because
I believe there are no good leaders who are not good followers.
After completing the management style assessment, I learned that I fit into
category maintenance manager style. This result does not surprise me at all and I think
this assessment quite accruate because I value efficient, information-focused, and detail
intensive. For instance, I try to be as organized as possible to maximize my effort and
energy on a daily basis. However, based on the result of the assessment, I need to work
on entrepreneurs leadership style which is change-oriented, innovative, and activist type.

Interestingly, I tend to stay in my comfort zone and avoid doing new things. Also, I do
not like changing my routine. However, I believe that it is important to balance all four
different types of leadership styles to be a good leader and a good follower. Overall, this
management style assessment was useful for me to recognize my strengths and
weaknesses.
In order to strengthen my leadership style, I will work on to be a good listener by
trying to see the world through the eyes of others. In the article by Giuliana (2008), it
states, the good listener does not merely hear what is being said but rather observes and
uses all the senses to reflect on the whole picture, which emphasizes good listening skill
is a learned behavior. In addition, the author explains credibility in leadership can be
enhanced through consistent verbal and non-verbal language whereas inconsistent verbal
and non-verbal language sends mixed messages to others and can jeopardize credibility
(Giuliana, 2008). I think credibility is the one of essential characteristics of the leadership
that I need to develop. I believe that leadership credibility can be achieved through
having an open mind, being honesty to others which including consistent verbal and nonverbal language, and respect others.
