TEACHING PROGRAMS AT UTEP

2
Abstract

In order to become an educator in the state of Texas college students who are preparing
themselves to become teachers need to complete one of the teaching programs that will help
them certify in the educational field they are interested in. The University of Texas at El
Paso offers theses teaching programs to students who are advanced in their studies and are
ready to obtain the knowledge of how to manage a classroom and how to be able to become
a successful educator. The purpose of this paper is to inform on how over the years the
programs have been offered at UTEP still remain the same and if they have slightly
changed. The gathered information has given details that the programs seem to be
remaining focused on the same important aspect of the programs. The focus on making
sure students are being prepared for a certification to teach is what has been always
prioritized. Finding evidence of what the teaching programs have offered previously was
easily found due to minor changes being done to what the programs have to offer to help
students become educators and be certified by the state.
One of the minor changes that was integrated into the College of Education has been the
change to the grade point average in order to become accepted into the teacher education
programs. With the change being integrated into the College of Education has lead to a
second research question which is on finding the reason the grade point average increased
from 2.5 to 2.75. The change is ultimately to continue to prepare dedicated future
educators prepared for the education field.
To conclude the teaching programs at UTEP have remained the same over the past years
but slightly changed on the regulations required to become admitted since they maintain
the focus on helping students become successful educators. The programs accept students

who have acquired the required education to be accepted into the teaching programs and
this has been implemented over the years. Creating successful educators is a priority to
UTEP and having successful students in the teaching programs at the university will only
outcome in positive results. The teaching programs are implementing the best educational
techniques for students to be able to become successful.
Introduction
The teaching programs are specialized in helping future educators become the best
educators they can be. The programs specifically help students gain knowledge on the
educational field they are interested in becoming certified in. Students will be able to take a
further look into what is in store for them once they officially are able to teach the subject
they are certified for. The experience has been provided to students over the years through
these teaching programs because that is what the primary focus of the programs is. The
university cares infinitely about the students that are enrolled in these programs to make
sure they gain the knowledge required to become successful in their future as educators.
The programs include excellent and well prepared PhD instructors to educate students on
how to provide the best education and the faculty also help the programs run as smoothly
as possible. The faculty members have been an important asset to teacher education over
the years because of the experience they have accumulated as educators. The goal for these
instructors is to have the students reach the highest level of teacher education to become
great educators. Over the years the university has had these programs with highly qualified
faculty members for the benefit of the students education and preparation for their
careers.

TEACHING PROGRAMS AT UTEP

Since the year 1920 the university focused primarily on basic teacher education. As the
years the years advanced reaching 1936 the teacher education programs where developed
in a more broad way to where education became a major. Teacher education became more
developed and more than 800 students were enrolled in the teaching programs to prepare
them to become teachers.
The effects that have been continuous in the teaching programs at UTEP are positive
effects. The program area chair of the teaching education Dr. Izquierdo has infinitely
worked to make teacher education successful. She has brought upon the university the
investigation of the National Professional Developing grant to help transform educational
success.(UTEP,2013) The work that Dr. Izquierdo has done has influenced the education
field greatly. The UTEP program area chair also has an influence on the school districts to
help develop accurate teaching methods. Having Dr. Izquierdo as part of the UTEP
teaching programs faculty truly demonstrates that students are being instructed by highly
experienced instructors to provide them with the best education to become ready to become
teachers and become accepted into the programs will also be expected to demonstrate to
their instructors they are ready to become educators. Students who are preparing
themselves to join the wonderful education field should be informed on what to expect out
of the teacher education programs. With this information being mentioned the purpose of
this literature review is to inform students who are seriously interested in the education
field and are eagerly waiting to be one step closer to reaching certification to become
educators. The purpose is to inform on the changes that have been done to the teacher
education programs since they first became available at our university.

Methodology

The information gathered for the literature review was gathered by the best sources
available for the topic. The sources included the very own UTEP teacher education website
which is available for students who are needing information or guidance on the teaching
programs at UTEP. The website officially provides detailed information on what teacher
education programs available so students can take a glance and see if there is a subject they
would like certification on to be able to teach.(UTEP,2013) The information available is
guaranteed for both undergraduate and graduate students. Both undergraduate and
graduate students can equally be accepted into the programs and this has been
continuously been occurring over the years. The teaching education programs have been
accepting these students to help them further their education in the subject of interest to
them. The programs gave been a helping hand to students over several years simply
because they have been focused on improving the education field. The way they try
reaching their goal of improving the education field is started with improving teacher
education and that is being done with the education the instructors provide for their
students. The UTEP teaching programs have worked so hard on making sure their
students are being well coordinated and instructed on their subject of interest. The way the
teacher education programs have been able to provide students with learning experience
over the years is by instructing them in a classroom as well as having them participate in
the field itself.
The information gathered directly from the UTEP teacher education website was highly
useful because it provides answers to question that students interested in the teaching
programs might have. The information was also found due to being referred to the website

TEACHING PROGRAMS AT UTEP

by the very own Dr. Izquierdo after a short interview performed to obtain a higher insight
of the teaching programs at UTEP. The interview consisted of speaking about any changes
that have been done over the years to the teacher education programs that might stand out
the most. The response to the question by the interviewee was "The programs have been
designed to support students interested in becoming highly professional educators and have
been modified to fit the needs to obtain the best experience the students can obtain to
become educators" said the interviewee. The teacher education programs are working each
and every day on making the programs the best they can be to create successful teachers.
The information gathered provides details on what most students joining the teaching
programs should expect to obtain from the programs.
Results
After reviewing the information collected concerning the changes created over the years to
the teacher education programs you can determine that the changes have only made the
programs better and have helped many students become successful teachers. The teaching
programs slowly began to integrate students to the programs to help them obtain the
education required to become teachers. Today over 2000 students are part of the teacher
education programs receiving experience on the certain subject they are interested in
becoming certified in. Students are ultimately successful when becoming accepted in the
programs. The students who become accepted should have already taken their certification
exams and that addition to the requirements to become accepted into the teacher education
programs reflect that the students are a step closer to becoming educators. The programs
have the students begin an internship so they can begin obtaining the experience that will
help them become successful in their careers. The internships are required to be taken by

TEACHING PROGRAMS AT UTEP

the students so they can become familiar with the field they are intending to join.
The quality of the information reviewed has been very appropriate for the review. The
information gathered portrayed information that will be beneficial to an education major
student who is becoming prepared to join the teaching education programs. The
information is of high quality because it certainly provides detailed information on how to
even become accepted into the programs to begin their teaching education started.
Reviewing the information collected through the College of Education website provides an
insight of the requirements that have been implemented over the year to the programs. The
teacher education programs have become a topic of interest to many students since more
students are interested in the education field.
The information utilized in the literate review has been able to help educate and provide
information on what the UTEP teaching programs have added to make them prestigiously
effective to create successful teachers. The information has provided feedback on what can
help students become accepted into the teacher education programs and inform constantly
on what are the required steps needed. The sources have equally informed on what
advantages can be received by students once they become ready to begin the teaching
programs. The information provides detailed information on what certification
undergraduate and gratuities students can receive and what has been implemented to
receive a certification. The website and going directly to the offices in the education
building at UTEP can be extremely beneficial to any student who is requiring more
information on what the requirements are to begin their education in the teaching
programs.
The differential between the data collected through the website and personally meeting

TEACHING PROGRAMS AT UTEP

with an experienced adviser from the department is that having an interview will help you
get further details and questions answered that might become an obstacle to get an answer
from directly from the website. It would highly at its best to meet with an advised form the
department to receive further explanations on the requirements and prerequisites that
might be necessary to jump start your education in the teaching programs.

Discussion
The evidence on the information gathered portrays opinions on what might be necessary as
a student who is interested in becoming an educator to get their education started in the
teaching programs. The information evidently provides details on what the changes were
done over the past years the teacher education faculty has created. The focus has been
primarily on the students and what will be of best benefit to them to become the successful
educators they aspire to be. Although the website might not completely provide
information on what the full requirements are they successfully provide details on what
should be appropriate information that can be provided to the public to generate the
interest in the teaching education programs. The students can also find contact information
in case they need further information from a faculty member directly. The website does
include limitations on information on the changes that might have been processed over the
years in the teaching programs, however they provide adequate information to come to a
conclusion that the teacher education programs have always been well maintained and
have always been worked on to make them the best they can be. Teacher education has
been improved to create competent and successful educators for our community. The
discovery of candidates with positive attitudes towards teacher education tend to aim in the

TEACHING PROGRAMS AT UTEP

teaching field to pursue a teaching carrier. "Found that teacher candidates level of initial
commitment to teaching was a good predictor of job entry" according to Chapman (1984).
Furthermore the teacher education programs are also interested in admitting students with
the strong desire to succeed in the education field.

The teacher education programs have been increasingly working on increasing the
students that can enter the college of education and can potentially complete the
undergraduate level and receive a certification.

Conclusion
To conclude the teaching programs at UTEP have been improved over the years to help students
who want to join the education field as their career. The entire purpose of this paper was to be

TEACHING PROGRAMS AT UTEP

10

able to inform primarily students with interest of becoming future educators on what they should
be expecting to obtain once they get accepted into the teacher education programs. They will
receive the knowledge of how to well maintain a classroom in accordance to the field subject
they will be receiving a certification in. The teaching programs guarantee to provide the best
individual education to each student so they can be prepared to become experienced educators in
there subject by when they get the opportunity to manage students and a classroom on their own.
"Beginning in the 1960's , states began testing prospective teachers in a direct effort to ensure
that teachers meet minimum standards for basic skills and subject knowledge" according to Sean
Corcoran (2002). The best feature of these teacher education programs are that they are
instructed by the best faculty members at UTEP and they count with the best technology
available to make sure students take a glance at what their future awaits for them.
Faculty members of the teacher education programs are also very pleased with being part of the
programs because they acknowledge that the students are eager to become successful educators
and they feel assurance that with their experience they can surely provide the best education
they can to have successful certified students. The information gathered on the teacher education
programs was collected to be able to provide the knowledge to students who might still be unsure
of what to expect from these courses. Students who are considering a career in education should
benefit from the information available to them so they can prepare themselves on what will they
expect out these programs but also what will be expected from them as students by their
instructors.
