Safety Orientation Training

Part 1
Basic
Personal Protection
Equipment (PPE)

Youre on your way to a

construction site for the
first time
Are you prepared?
Each project has its
own safety rules and
you need to be aware
of them

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

Did you know that in 2013 almost 4,500
workers were killed on the job, averaging
about 80 workers a week?
The Occupational Safety & Health
Administration (OSHA) states that 1 in 5
construction workers were killed on the
job site. The four leading causes of these
deaths:

Falls
Struck by object
Electrocution
Caught-in/between

Training Objective
Upon completion of this training, you will be able to :
List some of the PPE needed for this project
Identify when and how PPE equipment is used

Evaluate the consequences for non-compliance

or violations
Evaluate rewards for zero loss time

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

According to OSHA regulations Section 1910.132(a)
PPE for eyes, face, head, and extremities requires:
protective clothing
respiratory devices
protective shields and barriers
It has to be provided, used, and maintained whenever hazards
are present in the form of:

processes or environment
chemical hazards
radiological hazards
mechanical irritants

Hazards
Other basic forms of hazards are:

Flying & falling objects

Tripping over equipment & tools
Sharp objects
Sparks
Penetration of hazardous chemicals
Dust & fumes

Hazard analysis is performed to identify potential risks to

workers and worker environment

Non-compliance can pose risks to everyone

Types of PPE

Head Protection
Eye & Face Protection
Foot Protection
Hand & Arm Protection
Hearing Protection
Body Protection

Head Protection
Helmets/hard hats must be worn
on site at all times
It protects the head from impact and penetration due to:
Falling objects
Bumping head against fixed objects and equipment
Contact with electrical hazards
Hazard analysis will determine type of
headgear to used
Must meet ANSI Standard Z89.1-1986

Eye & Face Protection

Safety glasses (with side shields) must be worn
on site at all times
Glasses, goggles, and face shields protects the eye & face from:
Dust, dirt, metal, and flying material
Moving objects and chemical splashes
Heat, sparks, glare, and other rays
Eyewear and face protection must be fitted
properly and selected to protect against specific
hazard
Must meet ANSI Standard Z87.1-1989

Eye & Face Protection

A full face shield & safety glasses are required when:

Welding, Burning, using cutting torches

Cutting or grinding with a fiber blade
Drilling above your head
Cutting with a chop saw (concrete or stone
must be with wet saw
Chipping concrete, Powder Actuated tools
or Handling hazardous liquids
Respirator use requires proper training, medical
clearance, and fit-testing

Foot Protection
Work footwear (safety toe) must be worn
on site at all times
Safety footwear protects the foot or leg from:

Falling or rolling objects

Working with sharp objects
Working around hot or slippery surfaces
Working near electrical hazards

Safety footwear must be selected based on

the task-related hazard

Must meet ANSI Standard Z41.1-1991

Hand & Arm Protection

Task appropriate full-finger gloves must be worn
on site at all times
Protective gloves safeguards the hand & arm from:

Cuts, bruises, abrasions, fractures & amputations

Absorption of harmful substances
Chemical & thermal burns
Electrical dangers

Gloves must be selected based on the

task-related hazard

Hearing Protection
Hearing protection should be available for use
Earplugs or Earmuffs should be available when:

Using or working near loud machinery or equipment use

Employee is exposed to noise for long periods of time
Rule of thumb:
Hearing protection is needed if you have
to raise your voice talking to someone
3 feet away

Body Protection
Hi-visibility class 2 or greater vest with company logo
must be worn at all times
Also, body protection includes:
Shirt with at least 4 inches in length
Long pants no shorts
It protects against:
Temperature extremes and hot splashes
Potential impacts from tools, machinery
and materials
Protective clothing must be selected based
on the task-related hazard

Things to keep in mind

Do not wear non-safety PPE items on site and while working
such as baseball hats, tennis shoes, flip flops, high heels,
sunglasses, prescription glasses without side shields, tank
tops, and other items that could pose a risk of getting injured
Always refer to your companys safety manual or get advice
from safety coordinator or competent person when in doubt
Hazards are ever present on the construction site and being
are of the dangers can protect you and your fellow comrades

Safety Violations & Non-compliance

PPE non-compliance is not tolerated and discipline policies are
enforced. The following actions can be taken:
Warnings issued (verbal-first offence; written second
offence)
Workers may be asked to leave the site if violations are
deliberate and continuous
Retraining may be necessary to clarify issues
Your companys safety manager or supervisor will be notified
in writing
Open door policy to encouraged to speak up and/or act if
something is wrong

Motivation & Incentives

Compliance to safety rules are also rewarded. Rewards are in
the form of :
Individual recognition
Company recognition
All workers recognized for team effort and rewarded with
various items or events , example, gift cards, hampers,
luncheons, etc.
