CHE 493: Tutorial 1 (Fluid Properties)

1. A reservoir of carbon tetrachloride has a mass of 500 kg and a volume of 0.315 m3.
Find the carbon tetrachlorides weight, density, specific weight and specific gravity.

2. For low speed (laminar) flow through a circular pipe, the velocity distribution takes
the form v ( / )(r02 r 2 ) , where is the fluid viscosity. What are the units of the
constant ?

3. Determine the mass and weight of the air in a room whose dimensions are 4 m x 5 m
x 6 m. Given density of air is 1.16 kg/m3.

4. Estimate the specific gravities (gas) for methane and propane at atmospheric pressure
and room temperature. Their molecular weights are 16 g/mol and 44 g/mol.
(Commercial natural gas are mostly methane and propane, with small amount of other
substances, which may be ignored for this problem). If there is gas leakage, stated
which is more dangerous, a natural gas leak or a propane leak. Give reasons.

5. A hot air ballon is 5 m in diameter. A small blower and a gas burner are used to
inflate the ballon. If the specific volume of hot air is 0.9 m3/kg, what is the weight of
air in the ballon.? Explain briefly why the ballon rises in the atmosphere?

6. The fuel tank of a car can hold 75 litre. If it take 5 min to fill the tank, what is the
flow rate of fuel from the pump. Assume the relative density of the fuel is 0.68.

7. When 2.7 kg of salt solution is poured into a cylindrical bottle, 200mm in diameter,
the liquid level rises by 75 mm. Calculate the density and specific gravity of the
solution.
