Metamorphic Rock Unit: Lesson 3 Heat & Pressure
1-2 classes, 30-45mins each
6th Grade

Monday, October 21st, 2013

EDU 380

Rationale / Purpose for Lesson:

Relate content literature, reading guides, diagrams and exploration, to reference
and study content
Apply use of different study procedures
Recognizing the effects of heat and pressure during metamorphic rock formation

Summary of Lesson:
Review study guide and content book regarding heat & pressures large and small
scale changes and effects on minerals within metamorphic rocks

3. Students apply a wide range of strategies
to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and
appreciate texts. They draw on their prior
experience, their interactions with other
readers and writers, their knowledge of
word meaning and of other texts, their
word identification strategies, and their
understanding of textual features (e.g.,
sound-letter correspondence, sentence
structure, context, graphics).

Learner Outcomes / ObjectivesStem:

Students will be able to. . .
a. relate content literature, reading guides,
diagrams and exploration, to reference and
study content
(Synthesis)

ASSESSMENTS/ EVALUATIONS
a. student completed Heat & Pressure
Diagram, labeled and colored

b. Name the 2 conditions that cause

metamorphic rock to form
(Knowledge)
c. Give examples how metamorphic rock
formation conditions can cause smaller or
larger changes to rocks
(Comprehension)
d. Give examples of what metamorphic
rock formation conditions do to minerals
(Comprehension)

RESOURCES/MATERIALS/SETTING, AND GROUPS

1. McDougal Littell. (2005). Earths Surface. Houton Mifflin Company. Evanston, IL.
Section 3.4: Metamorphic rocks form as existing rocks change,
Diagram: How Rocks Change, pg. 97,
2. Metamorphic Rocks Content to Know: Reading Guide
3. Heat & Pressure Diagram
4. Heat & Pressure Diagram: Teachers Guide
5. Pen
6. Array of colored writing utensil (marker/pen/colored pencil)
MOTIVATION Opening (Motivation/Anticipatory Set/Hook/Building or Activating Schema):
Now that we have a study guide completed, we can use it to refer to key information. We will
use our note and a diagram in the book to better understand the effects heat and pressure have
on metamorphic rock formation.

PROCEDURES OF THE LESSON

1. View and discuss the Diagram: How Rocks Change, pg. 97,
2. Pass out the Heat & Pressure Diagram. View and discuss what each component means, and
compare it to the diagram in the book.

3. Explain that the class will fill in each metamorphic formation layer description together one
by one. THE STUDENTS ARE NOT TO WRITE ON THE DIAGRAM UNLESS
PROMPTED TO DO SO.
4. Choose a different student for each layer. Explain that the students are to read what occurs in
the layer on page 97. Then they will find and read which key points fit the description in their
study guide. Lastly, as a class rephrase the wording to fit the diagram, and write (in pen) it in
the appropriate layer.
5. Once each layer is complete, light colors will be used to differentiate sedimentary,
metamorphic and igneous layers. Students will indicate which color to which rock using the
key in the upper right hand corner of the diagram.
ACCOMMODATION/MODIFICATION/DIFFERENTIATION
To be addressed as the need arises.
Continue reading and notes the next lesson if more time is necessary
Closure:
Now we have added to our study guides. By using and creating visual representations, we
have practice using the important information about metamorphic rocks.
