Padhye Sab, Swami and my Dear Safety Champions of GILAC.

I welcome you to the second

Safety council meeting of GILAC.
Leadership is not a position. It is an attitude. Safety too is an attitude. It is a state of mind and a
way of living our life. Safety is the result. Safety is the choice in every moment of every day.
Those with a safety attitude, will choose to do the job safely in every moment.
Studies demonstrate that as many as 95% of all workplace incidents are triggered by unsafe
behaviors originating from an individual persons choice to act unsafely - people who don't
always buy safety for themselves. If compliance alone worked, we would be at Zero all of the
time. But we are not because we are limited by the underlying attitudes of our people on
safety.
But what if our people took an active interest in their own safety - consciously? What if they
stepped-up and began to take a leadership role in their own lives? When people stand-up and
become leaders in their own lives, they take pride in all they do. When pride becomes a
personal driver, self-preservation follows. That's when people buy-in to safety for themselves.
How do we achieve this? I am going to talk about importance of often neglected tool, which is
also mandatory for legal compliance SAFETY MEETINGS.
Safety meetings are not only a legal requirement, but they are the very foundation of our safety
culture. How we do safety meetings will either hinder or help our people to buying-in to safety.
The real responsibility of the safety champion is to build strong, reliable teams. Team members
with safety buy-in return positive safety results while reducing incidents. In other words, the
job of the safety leader is to help sell safety to the employees so that they want to buy it.
Safety is a marketing strategy - not a compliance program. Every word, sign, directive and
safety meeting either helps or hinders our people in deciding whether to buy safety for
themselves. There is no better venue than the safety meeting to impact many minds at once.
We as Safety leaders have to learn to market safety well. Convert our safety review meetings to
as interesting and important as our business review meetings.
We count on all of you to lead this worthy Goal of Zero. Happy Journey and all the best.
