Comprehension Strategy: Reread
-Sometimes you have may have difficulty understanding
the importance of facts, anecdotes, descriptions, and
explanations an author includes in a biography.
- You can reread difficult pieces of information and
determine why the author felt the details were
significant.
-As you read a biography, you should keep track of what
happens in the subject's life. Stop and think when you
find a piece of information you don't understand.
-For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook pages
163-164. Also refer to The RWW book page 256.

Genre: Biography
The following are key characteristics of a
biography:
-It is a true story of a person's life, written
by someone other than the subject. It
describes real events and people.
- It often times focuses on a specific time
period or aspects of a subject's life, such as
important contributions or challenges.
- It includes tables, which detail information in
an organized way, as well as photographs,
which show the subject.
- For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook page
166. Also refer to The RWW book page 258.

Vocabulary Strategy: Idioms


-An idiom is a phrase or expression whose
meaning is different from the literal meaning of
the words. It is a type of figurative language.
-To identify an idiom, look for groups of words or
expressions that are unfamiliar, unusual, or seem
not to make sense. Use context clues to identify or
understand the phrases.
-Example: he carried the weight of the world.
meaning: He had a lot on his mind

page 167. Also refer to The RWW book p. 259 and
the Word Study Center.

Comprehension Skill: Author's Point of View


-The author of a biography usually expresses a personal point of

view about the subject. As you read, identifying this point of


view can help you determine whether the author's assertions are
back with evidence or are unsupported.
- The determine the author's point of view, first review the text
for details about the subject that the author includes.
-Look closer for details, words, and phrases that indicate the
author's viewpoint about the subject.
