Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Planning
Brainstorm / mind map (add extra pages if necessary)

Attach a 400 word treatment of your idea

My advert will start of with a man in the bathroom about to shave

his massive moustache. As he is about to shave it the moustache
runs of his face and moves around his face , when he then moves
the razor to where the moustache is it moves again. He ends up

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

chasing the moustache around his whole face. To make the

moustache move I will use stop motion of around 25FPS. I will
make the moustache move around like a cartoon worm, I think this
will be comical. I will have some old gentlemens music in the
background to compliment whats happening on the screen , I will
use artificial lighting for the bathroom scene. I will be shooting on
my camera with a tripod, this will be good because the camera will
have to be in the exact same spot to take my next photo, if I didnt
use a tripod there could be possibilitys that something may jog the
camera and the shot would be out. I will make a storyboard and get
a rough idea on what will happen between each second as if I
miscalculate it will look like the object is leaping across the screen.

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?

The brief states that I must an advert for MOVEMBER. Movember is an annual event
where men grow a moustache and dont shave for male cancer awareness such as
prostate and testicular cancer. It states that it must be viewable by people 16+ , so I
can have some rude comical things in it.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
When using artificial lights I must make sure not to come into contact with the bulbs
because otherwise I might burn myself. If I drop anything , I will have to pick it up
properly otherwise I might hurt myself. When moving tables around to create my set I
will have to get someone to move them with me.

Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
As I am using music , I will have to send an email to the record company asking for
permission to use there song. If they say yes I must make it clear to give links to the
artists work and logos from the band and the record label.

Use of possible formats

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
stop-frame techniques
time lapse photography
plasticine animation
Claymation
using found objects
modelling
puppetry
combined formats

Why are you using that particular format?

For my idea in mind , I feel that these formats are necessary to carry out my ideas.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
With stop frame techniques you could use a wide range of models , like morph the tv show
they use a stop motion clay figure and move him around , this is good because its relatively
cheap to make and anyone can do this. Using found objects could be good so you wouldnt
have to make them for your set. For example if you were making an icering for the ice you
could use shards of glass.

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
One limitation of stop motion is thats its diffecult to get the correct speed then make it
consistent , its also very hard to make it fluid if you do not use the correct timeframe and
plan it out.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxsBSZMgowA
This uses stop motion in this 2 minute video it contains 25 shots a second, this person has
planned out there shots and where they want their characters to be every second. This is a
very professional video , it runs so smoothly like its an actual video and its runs at a normal
speed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acFZs7TNcOU
This stop motion is terrible , it contains around 1 shot a second and does not flow
whatsoever , it is also very corny. However , I like the stop motion style of the moustache
moving around her face and thats what I will do.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlV0ySXukmA

This video contains stop motion and the use of props, I like the fact that they use household
items to look like beards. In this video they have taken photos of the person with be beard ,
and the pencil draws them on. This is very cleaver because I like the effect that that the
pencil is rubbing out his beard and drawing a new one on/

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
My animation will be a comical advert about MOVEMBER

Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?

My animation will be about a man who has to shave off his moustache. Whenever he moves
the razor to his moustache, the moustache moves around his face. The moustache doest
want to be shaved as it wants to be growed for movember.

Characters
What characters will be in your animation?
I will have myself as a character. I will also have a moustache called tasha. The moustaches
will be brought from ebay and will be blond.

Bill is a very approachable character due to his kind nature and

donations to charity, he gives clear answers to people who ask him
questions which makes everyone like him. He is a very hard worker
working 3 jobs include one charity job which he dose voluntary.
When hes not at work he loves a good old holiday. This character
is very religious as he goes to church twice a week ever since his
grandma passed away. He has some very off-putting habits such as
biting nails, however he does this when no one is looking. This
character always has a catchphrase, which is If you cant beat em ,
join em! This character has many wives all over the world, including
one is England , Italy , France and Amsterdam. He absolutely loves
facial hair, when he grew his first hair on his face he cut it off and
has it framed on his windowsill so he can admire it every time he
wakes up in the morning. He has never shaved off his moustaches
since he was 14 and today is the big day when he has to shave it,

Add in images and drawings/ sketches of what they will look like.

What will they be made of?

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Movement of characters

How are you going to make your characters move?

I am using a real life person , so to make my images flow I will have a plan. For example if it
takes 1 second to move my hand towards my face , I will have to make sure my hand is by
my face after 25 frames

What is the purpose of an armature?

An armature is basically a skelington which you build a character around. For example ,
when building the characters for Wallace and gromit they will make an armature then build
the characters feet , hands , arms , legs , torso and head. Armatures are great because they
are so versatile and you can move them however you want,

Will you use them for your characters?

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

No , im using a real person.

If so, how will you make it?

Audio and Soundtrack

What audio will you have for your animation?

Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.

What actions will need sound effects?

Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

Define the following characteristics of your audience;
Gender
MALE

Age
16+

Interests
Drinking beer and playing football.

What forms of animation might they already watch?

They probably have seen chicken run and morph.

What images do you think they enjoy watching?

Everyone enjoys something comical and its quite hard to say what someone with a
moustache might like and dislike. But being stereotypical football and beer drinking contests.

What might they consider distasteful or offensive?

SHAVING THERE MOUSTACHE OR THERE FAVORATE FOOTBALL TEAM LOOSING.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
I will ensure that my advert is suitable for my audience because all men have moustaches.
Emphasis on MEN

How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
My animation can be viewed on YouTube as well as before a football match. It will also
mention about movember.

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

In my bathroom.

Does it have natural daylight?

Yes.

If so, you will need to block this out. Explain why.

I will have to shut my blinds to block out natural lighting. I must do this because the light
could change during my shots , and the background would have different shades of light.
This is bad because it will look unprofessional.

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

Yes , in my photo I have attached of my set further up the page you can see my bathroom
mirror , it has lights all down the sides.

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
My lights sort of have a white/blueish glow. This will give the effect that its late at night
because they are very dim colored lights. They give out just enough light to brighten up my
bathroom and keep some areas of my bathroom darker. I like the atmosphere it creates in
my bathroom.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

(LO3)

Frame numbers
You will need to label your images as frames
The first 24 frames will be written as;
0_1
0_2 etc etc

the following 24 will be

1_1
1_2
1_3
Ensure your clips are labeled as such. Screen shot the folder your clips are in, and copy the
image underneath.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For example;

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
