QUESTION 1
A lamina with density ( x, y) x y is bounded by the xaxis, the line x = 1, and the
curve y x . Find its mass and its center of gravity.

QUESTION 2
Consider the surface
z 2x y2

Find the area of this surface that is above the triangular region with vertices (0, 0), (0,
1) and (1, 1).

QUESTION 3
(a)

Newtons Law of Cooling. According to Newtons law of cooling, if an object at

temperature T is immersed in a medium having the constant temperature Ts , then the
rate of change of T is proportional to the difference of temperature Ts T . This gives
the differential equation

(i)
(ii)

What type of first order differential equation does the Newtons law of cooling
belong to? Justify your answer.
Solve the differential equation for T.

(b)

A thermometer reading 1000C is placed in a medium having a constant temperature of

700C. After 6 minutes, the thermometer reads 800C. What is the reading after 20
minutes? Solve by using Newtons law of cooling.

(c)

Blood plasma is stored at 400C. Before the plasma can be used, it must be at 900C.
When the plasma is placed in an oven at 1200C, it takes 45 minutes for the plasma to
warm to 900C. How long will it take for the plasma to warm to 900C if the oven
temperature is set at
(i) 1000C
(ii) 1400C
(iii) 800C
Solve by using Newtons law of cooling.
