A barrier to effective communication: Jargon.

In an organization, employees universally originate from diverse backgrounds and
have different patterns of speech. Even employees who work for the same organization but in
different departments often have divergent jargon. In simple, jargon is referring to a
specialized terminology or technical language that members of a group use to communicate
among themselves. Consequently, members of any other group may not be able to understand
them easily or perhaps, not at all. For instance, a while back at a private company, Wacker
Siltronic Corporation whereby their employees were breaking saw blades and causing a high
rate of product defects after the new machinery was introduced. The management eventually
discovered that the manuals were written for engineers, and those employees were guessing
the meaning of the jargon often incorrectly. Thus, jargon is really a serious communication
barrier.

Overcoming the barriers through feedbacks.

Many communication complications are directly attributed to misunderstanding and
imprecisions. These problems are less likely to arise if the manager acquires feedback, both
verbal and nonverbal from the audience themselves. A manager can ask questions about any
point or message to determine whether it was acknowledged and understood accordingly as
envisioned. Henceforth, using feedback may help to overcome those barriers to effective
communication positively. Feedback may happen in various ways. Asking an individual to
restate what has been stated for example; repeating instructions, is a quite direct method of
obtaining feedback. It may be as a puzzled look, a nodding head or failure to question
anything after complex instructions have been proposed. Thus, both sender and receiver of
information, in case of an organization; manager and employees should play an active role to
establish effective communication through the uses of feedback.
