Early Childhood Careers

Careers in the early education field is very important. The children of now are the adults
we have to depend on in 20 years. So people in these careers dealing with 0-6 year olds are very
important for the future of us. They help the child learn and keep them safe. Three careers I'm
interested in pursuing are preschool teacher, daycare worker, and nanny
The career of a preschool teacher is a very important career for our world to work. They
teach 4-6 year olds the basics they need to learn in order to be successful in kindergarten. . They
qualifications they must have is: at least an associates degree but some states call for a bachelors
(Whitebook 3). They have to be certified for their field, and they must have patience,
communication skills, creativity, instructional skills, and people skills (Preschool).
Pay for a Preschool teacher depends on the area and need. The average pay for them is
$13.04 an hour (Summary). The type of preschool is another factor for their pay. Public
preschool teachers are paid less than private teachers. The higher end of the school means they
pay can be more.
There is are many if not more Day Care workers than preschool teachers. Their job is less
focused on the education and more focused on just keeping the child safe. They usually don't
need a college degree. A high school diploma and some short on site training should be enough
(Bureau). States like Kentucky, New York, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska hire more
workers than any other state (Hamel).
Earnings for a day care worker can be between $7.68 to $14.08 per hour (Hamel). How
much they make depends on some factors. The location to a major factor. Daycares in
metropolitan areas earn more than ones in non metropolitan. These high paying areas include
San Francisco, New York, and Santa Rosa, California (Hamel).
Nannies are not thought of very often anymore. The career is still used today. The
qualifications for a nanny depends on the person, but they are usually about the same. They want
an education between a high school and a four year degree (Christensen), training in first aid and
CPR, ability to drive (and a safe driving history), ability to care for young children, plan and
organize activities on a whim, and the ability to multitask (Nanny).
Income for a nanny depends on many factors. Workers who work for upper income
families earn more than those who work for the middle income families. The higher your
education is the more you can earn. The more children in your care the more you make. Nannies
can earn between $325-$800 for live-in or $8-20 per hour for live out (Koh). It all depends on
the employer and employe.
The children of now are our adults twenty years from now. Thus by having good
providers for them they will do well. The careers of nannies, preschool teachers, and daycare
workers interest me. All of these careers call for similar things. They all call for at least a higher
education even though they prefer more, certification, and the ability to work with children. Also

their pay scales depend on the same things. They depend on need, location, skills, and education.
I want to work with children, so any of these careers would be a good fit for me.
