Americans arent the
only ones who are
wary of culture

Immigration. A wideranging global

more than 45,000
people in 47
countries released

theyre cool
downright chilly in
some cases
toward the toll it

national identities.
Majorities in every

all ISIS. The U.S.
Bureau of
International
Information
Programs (IIP)
reported last month
that "more than 90
percent of Syria's
cultural sites are
inside areas of
conflict and
displacement."
During the three-year
military conflict, the
country's ancient

UNESCO's World
Heritage List have
been reduced to
nothing more than a
pile of rubble.
Another earlier IIP
report says the Jobar
Synagogue in
Damascus, one of the
world's earliest
synagogues, was
flattened, and the
Greco-Roman
settlement, Palmyra,
was also on the brink
of destruction. Last

unique answer to the
question of what it
means to be human.
And together they
make up our
repertoire for dealing
with the challenges
that will confront us
as a species in the
years to come. The
key indicator of this
decline in cultural
diversity is language
loss. A language, of
course, is not merely
a set of grammatical
rules or a vocabulary.
It is the vehicle by
which the soul of
each particular
culture comes into
the material world.
Each one is an oldgrowth forest of the
mind. Linguists

Perhaps another
assumption is in
order. Let's assume
instead that the black
culture option is the
correct explanation.
That pathology
actually is something
reserved for black
people.
But again: What are

black preschoolers
are more likely to be

multiple people

the black culture of
single parenthood. It
was blamed on black
culture.
The article then goes
on to ask if it is so
impossible to
imagine that America
was born with sin
and keeps sinning.
No matter how much
you believe in the
perfection of the
American dream,
you've certainly met
enough Americans to
know that the ideal
may not always be
met. Racism is the
simplest answer and
racism, of all

UNESCO's World

Majorities in every
country agreed that
international trade

ranging from a low of
59 percent in the U.S.
to an enthusiastic 90
percent and more in
China, Israel and
seven other
countries. In todays
rapidly changing
world, many are
worried about losing
their traditional
culture.
Language, of course,
is not merely a set of
grammatical rules or

Finally, consider
this: The poverty
level in the Hispanic
community was 33
percent in 2012. In
1970, the figure was
24.3 percent. Poverty
is entrenched in the
Hispanic community.
Do we blame black
culture? Latino
culture? Maybe we
should consider that
Coates is right, and
admit that America
needs to fix itself
before it starts trying
to fix the cultures it
has spent a long time
breaking.
