SCENE I - DINNER WITH

THE DISTRICT 12 TRIBUTES

INT. PENTHOUSE - LATE EVENING

THE MOONLESS SKY OF THE CAPITOL DAWNS ON THE NIGHT BEFORE
THE GAMES BEGIN. THERE IS HIGH TENSION AND ANXIETY FROM EACH
CHARACTER. KATNISS (DAISY) IS LEANING ON THE WALL, TRYING TO
STAY COLLECTED WHILE GALE (GATSBY) STAYS QUIET, NOT WANTING
TO OFFEND. PEETA (TOM) IS SPEAKING OUT OF A GUILTY
CONSCIENCE YET HE'S ONTO SOMETHING BETWEEN KATISS AND
GALE.HAYMITCH (NICK) SITS ON THE COUCH, DRINKING WHILE EFFIE
(JORDAN) REMAINS ENTICED IN HER DUTIES.
PEETA
Gale, it's so odd to see you around here
in the Capital.
(EVERYONE EXCHANGES AN AWKWARD LOOK)
KATNISS
The ratings should be starting soon.
Peeta, will you go and turn on the
television?
(AS PEETA WALKS OFF, KATNISS GOES TO GALE, KISSES HIM)
KATNISS (CONT'D)
(WHISPERING)
You know I've always loved you.
(RATINGS STARTS TO PLAY IN THE BACKGROUND, THEY HEAR THAT
KATNISS GOT A HIGHER SCORE THAN PEETA)
PEETA
(CLEARS THROAT)
C'mon,
(GESTURES TO GALE)
(GALE LOOKS AT KATNISS UNCOMFORTABLY WHILE SHE REASSURES HIM
WITH HER GLANCE)
KATNISS
No! Both of you stay, there is no need
for that Peeta. They will call us to the
Arena first thing in the morning and I'm

sitting in the middle of you two

listening to snarky comments made to
silence. We are about to enter the
Quarter Quell as three from District 12,
we should be content with the few
peaceful moments we have left.
Everything seems so bothered! I can't
take this, I'm going to bed.
PEETA
Why are you so flustered Katniss? What's
wrong?
KATNISS
We've been training all day for the
Games, I'm exhausted and can't stand
hearing you fuss. I just...
(LOOKS AT GALE)
(SAYS TO HERSELF)
Why can't you be more like Peeta?
(PEETA OVERHEARS KATNISS)

Alright, good idea. Let's just all go to
bed, we wouldn't want to be tired for
the.. blood bath tomorrow morning.
GALE
Don't worry Katnip, everything will be
okay.
(GALE KISSES KATNISS GOODNIGHT AND PEETA SEES IT)
(TAKES DRINK OF FLASK)
PEETA
(ANGRILY WHISPERS)

HAYMITCH

(TAKES DRINK OF FLASK)

You must think I'm pretty dumb, don't

you? Well maybe I am but I know now what
is really going on here.
(PEETA LOOKS AT EFFIE AND HAYMITCH WITH DISGUST)
PEETA (CONT'D)
Don't play stupid Effie, I know you know
something. It's written all over your
pink tinted face.
EFFIE
Listen Peeta.If you had such a large
issue with Gale being here in the Games,
why didn't you address it with her
before she requested him at the Reaping?
PEETA
You know how stubborn she is, she can't
be talked out of anything if her heart
wants it.
(FADES OUT, EVERYONE GOES TO BED)
SCENE II - BREAKFAST WITH ALL OF THE TRIBUTES
INT. CAPITOL CAFETERIA - IN THE EARLY MORNING
ALL TRIBUTES FROM EACH DISTRICT ATTEND BREAKFAST BUT THE
TENSION IS STILL RISING AS THE TRIBUTES FROM DISTRICT 12 TRY
TO RESOLVE CONFLICTS BUT ONLY END UP DEEPER WITHIN THEM. A
SECRET AFFAIR MAY HAVE BEEN REVEALED BETWEEN PEETA (TOM) AND
JOHANNA (MYRTLE).
EFFIE
Good morning my lovely little tributes!
Can't you feel the excitement in the
air?
(EVERYONE MUMBLES SOME SCATTERED "GOOD MORNINGS" WITH SOME
EYE ROLLS)
(EVERYONE IS MAKING SMALL TALK, PEETA LOOKS STRESSED OUT)
PEETA
Look Gale, I dont know whats going on
between you and Katniss, but were all

from 12, and we need to be allies in the

games.
(ROOM GROWS SILENT)
PEETA (CONT'D)
Oh you don't?
(STARTS BICKERING BACK AND FORTH WITH GALE)
HAYMITCH
Okay Okay, let's all simmer down. How
about a change of subject, yeah? If one
of you kids wins the Games, what would
your plans be afterward?
(ASKS HIS DISTRICT ONLY)
FINNICK
(JUMPS IN)
Well, I would pull the 'star-crossed
lovers' act with Johanna and so when WE
win, I would take her to the nicest part
in Panem and away from
PEETA
(SHOCKED EXPRESSION ON HIS FACE,
CONCERNED TONE)
Would you really want to get away from
all of the nice treatment from the
Capitol? I-I mean, you don't look like
you're doing too bad, Finnick.
INTERCOM
All tributes report to the dressing
rooms, the Games will begin in 4 hours.
(TRIBUTES START TO GET UP AND LEAVE)
PEETA
(PULLS GALE ASIDE)
Look, I might be from your district but
that doesn't mean we are friends. Be
mindful of that Gale.
(GALE ROLLS HIS EYES BUT SMIRKS AT THE THOUGHT OF HIM AND
PEETA IN THE GAMES)

SCENE III - THE GAMES BEGIN

EXT. ARENA - EARLY EVENING
KATNISS (DAISY) IS FOUND ON HER KNEES, HUNCHED OVER WITH HER
HANDS THROUGH HER HAIR BECAUSE SHE IS ALONE AND DOESN'T KNOW
WHO TO PICK: GALE (GATSBY) OR PEETA (TOM). SHE CAN'T FIND
EITHER OF THEM IN THE ARENA.
KATNISS
(THINKING)
The only five people left in the Games
are Johanna, Finnick, Peeta, Gale, and
I. If i chose Peeta, everyone already
thinks we are in love. He is my only
chance of saving myself... Gale is the
one I truly love and have loved before
all of this ever happened.
(KATNISS BECOMES OVERWHELMED AND BEGINS TO SOB)
(OUT OF PURE RAGE AND CONFUSION, SHE PICKS UP GALE'S KNIFE
AND THROWS IT IN A RANDOM DIRECTION)
(KATNISS HEARS THE FALL OF A BODY IN THE BUSHES WITH A CANON
IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING)
(GALE COMES RUNNING ONLY TO FIND JOHANNA DEAD AND KATNISS
STILL ENRAGED WITH TEAR FILLED EYES)
GALE
Katniss, get up! Get up, we have to get
out of here NOW!
(THE TWO RUN OFF TO FIND SHELTER IN A CANAL NEAR A RIVER)
(KATNISS CRIED HERSELF TO SLEEP WHILE GALE BUILT A FIRE TO
STAY WARM)
(FINNICK FINDS JOHANNA'S DEAD BODY AND PEETA CROSSES THAT
PATH AS WELL)
PEETA
Finnick, what happened to her?!
FINNICK

You should know, you're the one who did

this! You have a knife that looks just
like this one, I've seen it. I thought
we were ALLIES!
(GOES AFTER PEETA'S NECK WITH THIS HANDS)
PEETA
No, you're not thinking straight! Can't
you see the "G" engraved on the knife?
It was Gale, Gale killed your beloved.
(FINNICK WALKS UP TO GALE WITH WIDE EYES AND JOHANNA'S BODY
DANGLING LIMP IN HIS ARMS. ALSO HAS GALE'S KNIFE IN HIS
BELT.)
FINNICK
You took the one thing that mattered to
me the most, you took my only reason for
living... and now, you're going to feel
as dead as I do.
(FINNICK SLITS GALE'S THROAT, ONE CANON SOUNDS)
('THE HANGING TREE' BEGINS TO PLAY AS FINNICK REALIZES THAT
HE MADE A MISTAKE)
FINNICK (CONT'D)
(CRIES)
Wh-what have I done?
(FINNICK ENDS HIS OWN LIFE BY KNIFE, ANOTHER CANON GOES OFF)
(KATNISS WAKES UP BECAUSE OF THE CANONS)
KATNISS
PEETA?! Where are you? Are you okay?
Peeta!
PEETA
We did it, it's over.
(PEETA GRABS KATNISS'S HAND AS THE CAPITOL'S ANTHEM BEGINS
TO PLAY)
INTERCOM
We now have our two victors of the 75th

Quarter Quell, congratulations Katniss

Everdeen and Peeta Mallark.
(SCREEN FADES TO BLACK AS THE MOCKINGJAY SYMBOL APPEARS)
