Vision
To enhance the quality of life in Texas and
to alleviate global hunger and poverty
through sustainable food, feed, fiber, and
biofuel production while protecting the
environment through scientific discovery
and education.

Mission
To promote the wise use, management,
and stewardship of soil, plant, and water
resources, by preparing students for
careers in soil, plant, and environmentally
related disciplines; discover new scientific
knowledge and develop associated
technologies to sustain environmentally
sound and economically profitable food,
feed, fiber, bioenergy and greenspace;

Changing with the Worlds Needs

The Soil and Crop Sciences Department in the
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas
A&M University was formed in 1958.
Agriculture produces food, feed, fiber, bioenergy,
and greenspace that benefits mankind through
the systematic production of plants and animals.
Approximately 42 percent of the worlds laborers
are employed in agriculture, which makes it the
most common occupation throughout the world.
Changing with the worlds needs, the Soil and
Crop Sciences Department conducts research and
teaching in food science, water use and quality,
turf ecology, and ecosystems, in addition to the
more traditional agricultural areas. For example,
some faculty are studying carbon sequestration,
a method for capturing carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere and storing it in plants and soils.
Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Texas A&M
AgriLife Extension conduct research that results
in new knowledge and technologies, and then
transfer that new knowledge to the public.
The mission of discovering, developing and
sharing scientific information is fulfilled by our
culturally diverse and world-renowned faculty.

UNDERGRADUATE

The Soil and Crop Sciences Department is

one of the largest at Texas A&M University
and is known throughout the world. We offer
two undergraduate degrees in Plant and
Environmental Soil Science and Turfgrass Science.
To declare a minor, students must notify their
major department and visit with an advisor in the
department with which they desire to obtain a
minor.
Visit with an undergraduate advisor if you
are interested in a double major in Plant and
Environmental Soil Science or Turfgrass Science.

GRADUATE

Students can earn a Master of Science and

a Doctorate in Agronomy, Food Science
and Technology, Genetics, Molecular and
Environmental Plant Sciences, Plant Breeding,
or Soil Science. Distance education masters of
science and doctorates, as well as continuing
education models, are also available in plant
breeding.
Our department has a large enrollment of
students at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Most undergraduates are from Texas,
but graduate students represent 20 different
countries in addition to the United States.
