because it is a piece that could be easily learned in a short time frame. That being said it still offers a variety of teaching points including folk song history. It could also be used as a warm-up that could then be used throughout the year. This song was selected for the fall concert because of the unique challenges it presents. It switches between homophony and polyphony and also introduces students to the romantic era. It also introduces students to singing in foreign languages, which will be an important skill for their spring concert.
Die Nachtigall : Felix Mendelssohn
Sure on this shining night: Samuel Barber
In These Delightful Pleasant Groves: Henry
Purcell
The May Night: Johannes Brahms
Give Me Your Stars to Hold: Richard Waters
El Grillo: Josquin Des Prez
This piece was selected for the first concert
because it is a piece that will grasp students attention from the first day it is opened. While the polyphony and cannon like melody may provide some technical challenges, it could be appropriately learned in two months. This song was selected for the fall concert because it is an appropriate introduction to the madrigal form. The students can then use this knowledge and apply/compare it to the other madrigal pieces they will be singing at the holiday concert.
This piece was selected for the fall concert
because of its use of chromatic lines. This is an important skill for the students to know in the second half of the year when then will be singing many multicultural pieces. This piece also allows the students to compare two Romantic composers. This piece was selected for the first concert because it is an introduction to 21st century pieces. This harmony is also simple to some of the harmonies that will be used later in the semester. It also offers a good contrast from the rest of the pieces that are being performed in this concert. This piece was selected for the first concert because it will allow students to compare the style of the Frottola to the madrigal. It is also in Italian (a romance language), this will help introduce students to the romance languages being used in the second semester.
Winter: Ringing in the Holidays

Hiney Mah Tov: Hebrew Folk Tune, arr. By Iris
Levine
This piece was selected for the holiday concert
because it is an upbeat song that incorporates the importance of coming together, which is a common theme during the holiday season. It also helps incorporate more then just one religious cultural group. That being said this song is also a great introduction to the second half of the year, as it introduces students to new rhythmic patters and a new language (Hebrew). This piece was piece was selected for the second concert because it is very difficult and would not be able to be learned in only 2 months, it requires more rehearsal time. Also by this time the students have already been exposed to the German language, so it wouldnt be as difficult. This piece also requires students to use their voice to mimic different sounds, which will be a helpful skill in the multicultural concert. This piece was selected for the fall concert because the students have already been exposed to the madrigal and renaissance style and will be familiar with the imitation used throughout. It will also contrast the more complicated composition of Das Glut Zu Speyer. This piece was selected for the holiday concert because it will require time to put the entire work together including instrumentation. The melody and vocal lines are not difficult themselves, but are complicated by everything else added in. It also adds to the idea of inclusion, which is especially important near the holidays. This piece was selected for the holiday concert because it is a unique arrangement of a wellknown piece. It also offers the students a chance to explore the jazz style. While the piece is programed in this concert because of the holiday essence of the piece, it is also programed later in the year because of the technical difficulties of the piece. It requires strong part independence and a confident soprano. The piece also is mostly on syllables and not text, which makes it more difficult to learn and memorize.

Dachrilis Simghera: Traditional Georgian Folk
Song
This piece was selected for the spring concert
because it is a good introduction to new types of music. It offers the students the chance to easily access a new style, as the composition itself is not overtly difficult. At the same time students will have to work to achieve the vowel unification necessary to show the story of the wounded boy. This piece was selected for the spring concert because it is quite difficult and would need to be studied for a few months before it could be performed. The students would also only perform the second half, as the entire piece would probably be too much to learn in a few months. The piece also requires students to have part confidence and rhythmic confidence, which is going to be stronger during the second semester.
Desh: arr. by Ethan Sperry
O Captain! My Captain!: John Leavitt
This piece was selected for the spring concert
because it adds a unique and familiar contrast to the other selected pieces. It also offers students the chance to compare American folk songs to folk songs of other countries.
Vamuvamba: Tiriki Melody arr. by Boniface
Mganga
This piece was selected for the spring concert
because it requires the students to be rhythmically confident. The rhythms of the piece are also quite difficult but could be introduced during the first semester, so by the time they reached this piece they are already familiar with them.
Igraj Kolce Slovenian Folk Song arr. by Jakob
Je
This piece was selected for the spring concert
because it will allow students to use and apply their knowledge of ostinatos and foreign text that they studied during the first semester. While this piece is in a foreign language, the language is repetitive and not difficult, so it is manageable even in a concert with this many languages being utilized. This piece was selected for the spring concert because the students will have already experienced Rubato in pieces from the spring semester. It is also a great piece to tie in the classical traditions, with the multicultural compositions because similar to the other multicultural pieces, the students will have a chance to learn about a new culture.
Cantique de Jean Racine: Gabriel Faur arr. By
John Rutter
Sensemaya: Sid Robinovitch
Stand Together: Jim Papoulis
This piece was selected for the spring concert
because it is very difficult and will need to be worked on throughout the entire year. That being said, I believe students will thoroughly enjoy rehearsing it. It gives the students an opportunity to improvise and use different vocal techniques. It will also be a piece that grabs the audiences attention. This piece was selected to close the spring concert because it emphasizes the need to come together regardless of our different cultures. It also is a high-energy song, which will leave the audience energized and wanting more. I also think this would be a great song to bring all of the choirs together on.
