How did the cold war affect Latin America?

And why did the United States get involved?


Latin America was asked to be communist or not during the cold war. The United States would support
Latin America if they decided not to be communist, Soviets if they said yes. The U.S would get involved
with Latin America to help go against Soviet Russia. This is how Latin America was affected during the
Cold War.
Whats the difference between left and right wing? And why is it confusing?
Right wingers were known as conservatives. The left wingers known as liberals. These are two sides that
viewed political thoughts differently. The left and right wings are the two sides of political views after
independence. Left wingers want more people to have a voice. They also believe the government should
help out with peoples aid. While conservatives want a small government and people have little say.
They think opposite of liberals as they want the government not to help out at all.
Why did the United States get involved in Cuba?
Since the U.S and Cuba were helping out in each others economy they were already involved with
them. US gives sugar from Cuba and receives money from Cuba but now they are enemies because of
the Communist Castro.
Whats a banana republic?
A banana republic is a country with a government that doesnt have any power. They also have
companies that export goods, for example, bananas which is why they are called a banana republic.
How did the CIA get involved in Guatemala?
At the time, Jacobo Arbenz Guzman was a dictator in full control of Guatemala. They helped overthrow
him but caused a lot of violence during and after.
What is the other infamous September 11?
Salvador Allende and his government was overthrown by Augusto Pinochet. A brutal leader that crossed
out human rights. He would completely control the government until changes were made because of
the violations of human rights. People tried to make him pay for the price he did but he died before they
could.
Who were the disappeared in Argentina?
People killed by the government. They would be taken away from their home and never seen again
because they went against the government. More than tens of thousands of people were taken and
killed.
Why was it controversial when the United States intervened in Nicaragua?
In 1979 there was a revolt with two sides. The Sandinistas and Contras. The Contras were an anticommunist group that was supported by the United States. In 1983, they said Reagan couldnt supply
the Contras anymore so he began sending weapons to Iran and they would ship them over.
What violence occurred in Brazil and El Salvador?

There was a civil war in El Salvador between the wings that killed thousands of people before peace
came in 1992. There was hardly any violence in Brazil just the changing of their government.
If Democracy is a goal of LA nations, what does a nation have to have in order to achieve this goal?
I think that democracy is a goal but they will never have it. The reason I think this is because of the
citizens seem to always interrupt the process of it. There is always a civil war or riots over something in
the government. This makes it hard for the government to change their system when the people dont
like it. So really you just need everyone on the same page to be able to gain a democracy.
