5. An organic acid, HX, reacts with sodium hydroxide solution according to the equation HX + NaOH > NaX + H,O (@) A solution of the acid was titrated against sodium hydroxide solution, using phenolphthalein indicator. (Name the piece of apparatus used to add the sodium hydroxide solution to the acid. (ii) State the colour of the solution at the end-point. ® (iii) Give two precautions that should be taken during the titration in order to obtain an accurate end-point. 1 (b) In the titration, a solution containing 1.50g of the organic acid HX was exactly neutralised by 24.60 cm} of sodium hydroxide solution of concentration 0.500 mol dm @) Calculate the number of moles of NaOH in 24.60 cm? of solution. Gi) State the number of moles of HX in 1.50 g. (iii) Hence calculate the relative molecular mass of HX. (© State why a titration should always be repeated. @ (Total 10 marks) 5. Aseries of experiments was cartied out using hydrochloric acid of unknown concentratio and sodium hydroxide solution of concentration 2 mol dm Different proportions of hydrochloric acid and water were added to 25 cm of sodium: hydroxide in a polystyrene beaker, all at the same temperature. The following table show the proportions used each time. Experiment | Volume of hydrochloric acid of || Volume of water unknown concentration I oO 35 I 5 30 i 10 25 Iv 15 20 Vv 20 15 VI 25 10 VIL 30 5 VII 35 0 After stirring, the maximum temperature of the mixture was recorded. The readings o the thermometer are shown in the following diagram. Ay a (a) Draw a suitable table and record the thermometer readings with the corresponding volumes of hydrochloric acid. B) (b) Plot a graph of temperature against volume of hydrochloric acid added. Temperature/ °C 40 35 30 25 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 Volume / cm? QB) (©) Use the graph to estimate the volume of hydrochloric acid that reacted completely with 25 cm? of sodium hydroxide solution and the temperature at the end point of the reaction. (Volume of hydrochlotic acid... sss (i) Temperature (@) Calculate the concentration of the hydrochloric acid in mol dur. @ (Total 10 marks)
