VI.

A. Introduction
Before receiving any details about the novel have the students begin to complete the
Lord of the Flies Anticipation Guide individually. Students will fill in the Before
side and add at least a sentence for the reasoning portion. When students are finished,
have a brief group discussion about which ones they feel strongly about and why.
B. Lesson Development
Begin reading through the Prezi and showing the video clips.
On slide 17 discuss with the students whether or not they believe they could
survive in this situation or not. Do this group activity aloud together as a class:
o Create a list of 10 items that your group would want if you were stranded
on an island. (write on whiteboard)
o If you could only keep 5 of the items, which 5 would your group keep?
(cross off unnecessary items)
o If your group was alone on an island, what are the first 5 things you would
do?
o Create a list of 5 rules for everyone to follow on the island.
Continue through the rest of the Prezi and video clips. Take questions at the end.
Give each student a piece of lined paper and prepare the PowerPoint. Before
starting, inform the students that there are no right or wrong answers when
finishing these prompts. Go through each slide of the PowerPoint and give
students necessary time to complete their sentences. In the end, go back through
the slides and ask students to share their responses.
C. Closure/Summary
Give each student a copy of the Lord of the Flies Symbols and Prediction worksheet.
Help students think back to both the Prezi and the PowerPoint for the symbols in the
novel. Have them, to the best of their abilities, draw the symbols in the box.
Afterwards, have them complete the bottom half of the worksheet by making a
prediction about what the Lord of the Flies is going to be about.

VII.

Assessment/Evaluation
The general classroom discussions will help evaluate students attention and
participation. At the end of the lesson, collect the Lord of the Flies Anticipation Guide,
their papers from Theme Analysis PowerPoint, and the Lord of the Flies Symbols and
Prediction worksheet. The Anticipation Guides and their papers from the PowerPoint will
show the students thoughts and feelings. The students predictions will be the main
assessment to determine if they learned on key concepts of the novel.

VIII.

Adaptations, Modifications & Extension Activities

Extension Activity: Cloze Reading Background Information worksheet

IX.

Adaptations: The expectations for writing will need to vary from student to student.
The reasoning on the Anticipation Guides and the answers to the prompts from the
PowerPoint may vary from a couple words to complete sentences. Finally, some
students may only write three sentences instead of five or more for the prediction.

Interdisciplinary Connections
Students could focus on grammar and their writing skills throughout this lesson. Their
sentences from the PowerPoint could be graded for completeness and accuracy. Also,
their predictions could be graded on complete sentences, organization, word choice, etc.
