Very simply, this is a field of a medical specialty that deals with obstetrics and
gynaecology. It is also known as OB-GYN, OBG, O&G or Obs & Gynae.
This is a postgraduate training program which spans over 5-7 years depending on the
country where studies are undertaken.
There are diverse branches for specialization, such as:

Maternal-fetal medicine which is related to obstetrics/ perinatology, focusing on


the medical & surgical management of high-risk pregnancies. It also involves
possible fetal surgery directly related to decreasing chances of mortality.
Reproductive infertility and endocrinology focuses on the various biological
causes for in fertility, as well as interventional treatment of the condition
Gynaecological oncology focusing on the medical & surgical treatment of
cancers of womens reproductive organs
Female pelvic medicine & reconstructive surgery diagnosis & surgical treatment
of urinary incontinence and prolapse of the pelvic organs in women.
Advanced laparoscopic surgery
Family planning training in contraception & medical termination of pregnancy
(abortion)
Paediatric & adolescent gynaecology
Menopausal & geriatric gynaecology
