May

Labuan

PREPERATION
The men used to organise group hunting
expeditions to provide enough meat for the
celebrations.
The women organised themselves to produce
enough rice for making rice wine (tapai) and for
cooking on the day of the Kaamatan celebration.
At village (or kampung) level, the eve of the
Kaamatan Festival was lead by the Bobohizans,
the ritual specialists paying homage and offering
thanks givings to Bambaazon, the rice spirit, for
the good harvest.

CELEBRATION
o

With the decline in practice of this

animistic religion and the rise of
monotheistic religions such as Christianity
and Islam among the Kadazan and Dusun
people in Sabah, much of the ritualistic
aspects of Kaamatan are being left out of
the celebration although in some places
they may still be practiced. Kaamatan is
often accompanied with Sugandoi, a
singing/karaoke contest, Unduk Ngadau,
a beauty pageant, and drinking alcohol.
According to the beliefs of the Kadazan
rice spirit is part of Kinoingan - also
known as Bambaazon, who is worshiped
as creator and very powerful source of life.
Bambaazon rice spirit is honored to rice,
rice, and rice. Many believe that "No rice,
no life.
