Section 6.6: Analyzing Graphs of Quadratic Equations.

We already know the standard from of a quadratic equation, ax2 +bx + c = 0. There is,
however, another way to write a quadratic equation called the vertex form.
The vertex form of a quadratic equation is y = a(x - h) 2 + k , where:
• (h , k) is the vertex of the parabola.
• x = h is the axis of symmetry
• a describes the opening and shape of the parabola.
 if a is positive, opens up
 if a is negative, opens down
 if |a| is greater than one, it gets narrower as |a| increases.
 if |a| is between zero and one, it gets wider as |a| decreases.

Example: y = 2(x+2) 2 + 1.

How can we rewrite a quadratic equation from standard form to

vertex form? Ans:_________________

Ex1: y = x2 + 8x -5 ST1. y =
x2 + 2x + 4

Answer-_______________________ Answer___________________________
Ex2: y = -3x2 + 6x -1 ST2. y = -2x2 - 4x + 2

Answer______________________ Answer___________________________

How can we rewrite a quadratic equation from vertex form to standard form? Ans:_________________

Ex3: y = (x + 4)2 – 21 ST3: y = -2(x + 4) 2 + 1

Answer_____________________ Answer_______________________

Ex4: Write an equation for the parabola with the given vertex that passes through the given point.

a) vertex (6,1), point (5,10) b) vertex (-4,3), point (-3,6)

Word problem: The trajectory of a skater after jumping a 3 ft ramp can be modeled by the following
equation: h = -x2 + 20x -97, where h is the height in feet after he jumped, and x is the horizontal
displacement, also in feet. Find the maximum height the skater reaches in the air, and how far from the
ramp is he at this point.
