Section 6.7: Quadratic Inequalities:
Graphing and Solving.
When we graph an equation, we have always used a continuous (solid) line.
When we graph inequalities in the coordinate plane (xy-plane), if the inequality is:
• Greater than or less than, we use a ___________________________ line. ( < , >)
• Greater than or equal, or less than or equal , we use a ____________ line. ( ≤ , ≥ )
Shading: to determine the shading we must use a ___________ point.
If true: then shade selected side. If false: then shade opposite side.

Ex 1) Graph using any method: find axis of symmetry, vertex, table of values.
y > -x2 - 6x - 7

ST1) Graph y > x2 – 3x + 2

Graphing quadratic inequalities with only one variable.
If a is negative multiply or divide by -1 (Change the symbol)
To solve we must change the inequality sign to a(n) ____________ sign.
Instead of graphing in the xy-plane, we now graph in a _____________ ______________.
I) To determine the points in the number line
If the original inequality had a:
< > Greater than or less than, we use a ___________ dot on the number line
≤ ≥ Greater than or equal, or less than or equal, we use a __________ dot on the number line.
II) To determine the shading in the number line we must use ________ points.
After shading, we determine the solutions individually. (Solution 1 , Solution 2)
III) To determine the solution to the inequality.
If original inequality was greater than (or equal): one solution _______ the other. (UNION).
If original inequality was less than (or equal): one solution ________ the other. (INTERSECTION).
IV) To express the solution:
in set builder notation: {x | solution1 and/or solution2}
in interval notation: parenthesis exclude (for open dots) and brackets include (for closed dots)

Ex2) Solve x2 +2x - 3 > 0 ST2) Solve x2 - 4x + 3 > 0
