Curriculum Expectations
Demonstrate an understanding that the world is made up of countries, continents, and regions
Use a variety of resources and tools to gather, process, and communicate geographic
information about the countries studied;
Specific Expectations
By the end of the lesson students should/will be able to:
Recognize and use pictorial symbols (e.g., for homes, roads), colour (e.g., blue
line/river), legends, and cardinal directions (i.e., N, S, E,W) on maps of Canada and other
countries;
Locate on a globe or map their local community in Ontario; Canada;
Construct and read a variety of graphs, charts, diagrams, maps, and models to clarify and
display information
Learning/Teaching Resources
Large puzzle pieces of the provinces to trace (weather permitting)
Capital Cities written on paper
Skipping ropes
Side walk chalk
Introductory Activity
We will review the capital cities of the provinces inside on the carpet.
Developmental Strategies
We will be going outside (weather permitting) to trace the puzzle pieces of the map of Canada (if
inside we will build the puzzle on the carpet). I will ask students, what order do the provinces
go in?. We will then label the capital cities, I will ask the students, what is the capital city of
_____?. After the map is drawn we will place lines of longitude and latitude on the map of
Canada with skipping ropes.
Differentiated Instruction Strategies
Bianca works one on one with an aide and can choose whether or not to participate in the circle
or do the follow up activity, Ms Samantha (her aide) may help her with the activity or build it for
her to use as a teaching tool.
Culminating Activity

After the students are finished we will head back inside and they will individually do their work.

The students will be marked on participation and understanding of provinces and capitals. Found
in student assessments.
