Vasopressin, arginine vasopressin, antidiuretic hormone, argipressin
AA Length:__9___
AA Derivative of: nonapeptides
Other category notes:

Posterior pituitary gland, it is also secreted from parovocellular neurons of the paraventricular
nucleus from the median eminence, also produced by magnocellular neurosecretory neurons in
the Paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus and Suproaoptic nucleus. Vasopressin also
secreted by different types of neurons.
Secreted by the posterior pituitary gland and it responses in effect to decrease in plasma
volume, an increase in plasma osmolarity, and CCK being secreted by the small intestine
Kidney, cardiovascular system, central nervous system
Increases urine osmolarity and decreased water excretion in the kidney, in the cardiovascular
system it leads to vasoconstriction and results in arterial blood pressure increase. In the central
nervous system vasopressin leads to aggression, blood pressure regulation, and temperature
regulation. Also in the CN, vasopressin works with CRH to regulate the release of corticosteroids
from the adrenal gland during times of stress, pregnancy, and lactation.

Receptor linked to:

Mode of action: Membrane receptor
nd
2 Messenger: adenyl cyclase and cAMP
Cytosolic receptor

Disease(s) / Pathologies:
Hyposecretion: urine becomes diluted and a large volume is excreted, leads to diabetes insipidus
Hypersecretion: urine is concentrated and less volume is excreted, Schwartz- Bartter syndrome,
syndrome of immoderate antiduresis

Therapies:
Hyposecretion: fluid management, drugs like carbamazepine, diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, and lithium
induced nephrogenic Di with the administration of amiloride
Hypersertion: a long-term fluid intake restriction, and administration of tolvaptan, conivaptan,
demeclocycline
