This is a primary source because it is the personal memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant.
This was important because it showed that even if he was in disagreement with his
orders, he was still going to follow them to the best of his ability. It also showed that
he was influenced by the leadership style of Zachary Taylor. This quote was used in
the Early Military Life section to show that Grant learned a great deal from his
experience.

This is a primary source because I am using direct quotes from firsthand sources.
This source showed me examples of the early influences that shaped Grants military
career. This information was used in the early Military Career section to show the
progress Grant made from enlisting to becoming the head of the Union Army.

the White House. This helps us to understand his personal life and his need to provide

This photo Of Julia Grant and her two children was sent to Ulysses S. Grant when he
was serving in the military in 1854 when he was homesick. After receiving this
picture, he resigned from the military and rejoined his family. This helped me to
understand that he was very focused on his family and did not want to be away from
them.

This quote is a primary source because it was something he said himself. This gave

This link described the scenes at the Battle of Shiloh and was a victory for the North
and a turning point in the war. This battle showed that Grant made quick and tough
decisions and that he was willing to pay the price to achieve his goal.

based on interpretation from primary sources.

This is a secondary source because it is based on interpretations from other people
and sources. This was helpful in teaching me about where Grant learned how to
prioritize and prepare in order to make good decisions. This is used in the Early
Military Life section to show how he learned to be a great leader.

The Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant is described in all of its glory and shortcomings. I
used this to show that he was remembered and elected because of his respected
military career, but his presidency was marred by his tendency to trust that people
were as honest as he was. Due to that, his presidency was not very successful. This
secondary source was important because it gave me an insight to Grants presidency
and the struggles he faced as President.

This secondary source because shows a recent photograph of his birthplace. This
site is now listed as a National Historic Site.
This photo shows that he was from humble beginnings and bettered himself through
his hard work and determination. This was used to show that his life began in Ohio
and was part of the Early Life section of my website.
